Roe

The Supreme Court of the United States of America issued a 7-2 decicion on January 22, 1973 in favor by Jesse Barksdale o f “ J a n e Roe” (Norma McCorvey) holding that women in the United States had a fundamental right to choose whether to have abortions without excessive goverment restriction and striking down Texas’s abortion ban as unconstitutional” “This was a landmark decicion by the court that ruled that the constitution of the United Stated generally protects a pregnant woman;s liberty to choose to have an abortion.”

A Landmark Decision

“Landmark court decisions in the United States substantially change the interpretation of existing law. Such a decision may settle the law in more than one way” “The decision struck down many federal and state abortion laws, and fueled an ongoing abortion debate in the United States about whether, or to what extent, abortion should be legal, who should decide the legality of abortion, and what the role of moral and religious views in the political sphere should be. It also shaped debate concerning which methods the Supreme Court should use in constitutional adjudication. “The case was brought by Norma McCorvey—known by the legal pseudonym "Jane Roe"—who in 1969 became pregnant with her third child. McCorvey wanted an abortion but lived in Texas, where abortion was illegal except when necessary to save the mother's life. Her attorneys, Sarah Weddington and Linda Coffee, filed a lawsuit on her behalf in U.S. federal court against her local district attorney, Henry Wade, alleging that Texas's abortion laws were unconstitutional. A three-judge panel of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas ruled in her favor and declared the relevant Texas abortion statutes unconstitutional. The parties appealed this ruling to the Supreme Court.”

Community and National News

On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court issued a 7–2 decision holding that the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution provides a fundamental "right to privacy", which protects a pregnant woman's right to an abortion. The Court also held that the right to abortion is not absolute and must be balanced against the government's interests in protecting women's health and prenatal life. The Court resolved these competing interests by announcing a pregnancy timetable to govern all abortion regulations in the United States. During the first trimester, governments could not regulate abortion at all, except to require that abortions be performed by a licensed physician. During the second trimester, governments could regulate the abortion procedure but only for the purpose of protecting maternal health and not for protecting fetal life. After viability, which includes the third trimester of pregnancy and the last few weeks of the second trimester, abortions could be regulated and even prohibited, but only if the laws provided exceptions for abortions necessary to save the "life" or "health" of the mother. The Court also classified the right to abortion as "fundamental", which required courts to evaluate challenged abortion laws under the "strict scrutiny" standard, the most stringent level of judicial review in the United States. “The Supreme Court's decision in Roe was among the most controversial in U.S. history. Roe was criticized by some in the legal community, including some who support abortion rights who thought that Roe reached the correct result but went about it the wrong way, and some have called the decision a form of judicial activism. Others argued that Roe did not go far enough, as it was placed within the framework of civil rights rather than the broader human rights. Anti-abortion politicians and activists sought for decades to overrule the decision; polls consistenly show that a plurality and a majority, especially into the 21st century, opposed overruling Roe. Despite criticism of Roe, the Supreme Court reaffirmed its "cen-

tral holding" in its 1992 decision Planned Parenthood v. Casey, although Casey overruled Roe's trimester framework and abandoned Roe's "strict scrutiny" standard in favor of a more malleable "undue burden" test. ‘On June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court overruled Roe in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization on the grounds that the U.S. Constitution makes no reference to abortion, an act regarding which the argument banning it sees the rights of the mother as in conflict with the rights of the fetus, and was unknown in U.S. law until Roe. This view was criticized by the dissent opinion and disputed by some law historians, who argued that many 21st-century rights that are taken for granted, such as contraceptive, interracial marriage, and same-sex marriage, are also not explicitily mentioned in the U.S. Constitution. The decision was supported and opposed by the anti-abortion and abortionrights movements, respectively, and was generally condemned by international observers, figures, and foreign leaders, including Boris Johnson, Emmanuel Macron, Olaf Scholz, and others.” “In the past history of abortion some states had laws that was called “quickening.”

Quickening

“In pregnancy terms, quickening is the moment in pregnancy when the pregnant woman starts to feel the fetus' movement in the uterus”

sequent pregnancies. For them fetal motion can sometimes be felt as “early as 14 weeks. “Usually, quickening occurs naturally at about the middle of a pregnancy. A woman pregnant for the first time (i.e., a primigravida woman) typically feels fetal movements at about 18–20 weeks, whereas a woman who has given birth at least once will typically feel movements around 15–17 weeks.”

Legal history

“The word quick originally meant "alive". Historically, quickening has sometimes been considered to be the beginning of the possession of "individual life" by the fetus. British legal scholar William Blackstone explained the subject of quickening in the eighteenth century, relative to feticide and abortion:” “Life... begins in contemplation of law as soon as an infant is able to stir in the mother's womb. For if a woman is quick with child, and by a potion, or otherwise, killeth it in her womb; or if any one beat her, whereby the child dieth in her body, and she is delivered of a dead child; this, though not murder, was by the ancient law homicide or manslaughter. But at present it is not looked upon in quite so atrocious a light, though it remains a very heinous misdemeanor.” “Nevertheless, quickening was only one of several standards that were used historically to determine when the right to life attaches to a fetus. According to the "ancient law" mentioned by Blackstone, another standard was formation of the fetus, which occurs weeks before quickening. Henry de Bracton explained the ancient law, about five hundred years before Blackstone: If one strikes a pregnant woman or gives her poison in order to procure an abortion, if the fetus is already formed or quickened, especially if it is quickened, he commits homicide”. “In England in the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries, a woman convicted of a capital crime could claim a delay in her execution if she were pregnant; a woman who did so was said to "plead the belly".

“The first natural sensation of quickening may feel like a light tapping, or the fluttering of a butterfly. These sensations eventually become stronger and more regular as the pregnancy progresses. Sometimes, the first movements are mis-attributed to gas or hunger pangs.” “A woman's uterine muscles, rather than her abdominal muscles, are first to sense fetal motion. Therefore, her body weight usually does not have a substantial effect on when movements are initially perceived. Women who have previously given birth have more relaxed uterine muscles which are more (Continued on page 3) sensitive to fetal motion during sub-

What you’ll find after encountering the couple is not just the wonderful provision of food, but wisdom and actionable tips to improve your life. With Mike Minnis at the helm, Landmark Training is able to operate a farmer’s market, food pantry, urban outreach center, and other advocacy programs. The Minnis family runs a two-acre farm in inner-city Memphis, which was inspired by their son. Despite all of the obstacles that can arise with developing a farm in an urban area, the founder and Landmark Training staff were up to the challenge. Their hard work earned them the top prize at Tennessee’s Small Farm Expo. Minnis offers Landmark Farms tours, which gives visitors an upclose and personal experience of what it takes to maintain an urban farm.

(Continued from page 1) “The law held that no women could be granted a second reprieve from the original sentence on the ground of subsequent pregnancy, even if the fetus had quickened. In Ireland on 16 March 1831 Baron Pennefather in Limerick stated that pregnancy was not alone sufficient for a delay but there had to be quickening.”

WELCOME TO LANDMARK TRAINING DEVELOPMENT COMPANY!

Empowering the Community. Supporting Organic Lifestyle. Championing Local.

We work diligently in support of healthier environments where families have access to nutritious foods, positive experiences, and educational guidance to help them thrive. Neighborhoods need champions – members, volunteers, donors, teachers, and organizers – to keep farmer’s markets and food pantries essential to the community. Why? Because everyone deserves to have access to healthy produce. Much of the food sold at the Landmark Farmer’s Market is grown and harvested by our staff and volunteers on our urban farm located in the Memphis Area. In addition to increasing food access, our aim is to serve as a center for community involvement. This takes commitment, true passion, cooperation, and insight.

Sustainability is Our Main Goal

On a worldwide scale, agriculture is facing one of its hardest challenges: to produce enough fresh, nutritious food to accommodate the needs of present and future populations. Additionally, the protection of the environment and human health are also at stake. A core principle of the Landmark Training Development Team is to use research and hands-on training to implement innovative solutions to these sustainability setbacks. We cannot do this alone. This cause requires the participation of farmers, researchers, volunteers, retailers, public officials, and more.

The Youth Urban Farm Training Program

The Youth Urban Farm Training Program is a paid apprenticeship for youth living in Memphis, TN that is run all year around. Apprentices are involved in all parts of nurturing the farm – planting, weeding, harvesting, composting, marketing, outreach, and more. With Landmark, you will: * Grow fresh vegetables for the community, while learning about agriculture, food, plants, food justice, and the environment. Develop skills in teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, and communication. * Interested in joining the program? Want to include your group, class, or organization? Food Pantry

Landmark Training Development Company created the Landmark Food Pantry to help serve as a solution to food poverty. Families who are struggling financially deserve to have fresh food in their households. We knew there must be a cost-effective way to get food into the hands of citizens that needed it. Here’s what’s great about the Food Pantry: Puts fresh food and vegetables on a family’s table. Helps the environment by directing matter into compost that helps grow more plants, trees, and maybe even more produce for the communit. Inspiration: From the SouthEastSide Church of Christ

Scripture: Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject by Ocie Duckworth thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children. Subject: Life Is About Making Solid Decisions! Brothers and Sisters, I hope everyone is doing well this evening. The man of GOD always shares his wisdom with us and he once told us which is my subject for tonight life is about making solid decisions. When GOD blesses us to wake up in the morning. Some were down the line we are going to be faced with making some sort of decision in our life. We find people every day making all sorts of decisions in their life that will change the way they are living. A decision > is defined as a conclusion or resolution reached after consideration, and a choice is an act of selecting or making a decision when faced with two or more possibilities. **Making decisions brothers and

sisters will always be difficult because it takes time and energy to weigh our options. We find ourselves second-guessing ourselves and feeling indecisive which is just a part of the process. When we talk about life is about making solid decisions a lot of people have a big misunderstanding about God. They know God planned their existence and has a purpose for their lives. But they have the wrong idea that every detail of life is preplanned. They think they have no choice. Brothers and Sisters in fact, the Bible teaches the exact opposite. God has a plan and a purpose for our lives. God will not force us to do his will. GOD gives us a choice to accept or reject his salvation. GOD gives us a choice to obey or disobey his directions. gives us the choice to follow or ignore the purpose for which we were created. Far too many people miss the purpose of their life because of their poor choices and decision. The purpose of God's plan is to provide us with eternal happiness. The more we understand GOD’s plan, the more we realize we can't make it back to God on our own.

GOD made it possible for every sin and every mistake we make during this test of life to disappear and be forgotten through Jesus Christ. Exodus 13:3 Give us a good example of our subject>The bible tells us that Moses said to the people, “Remember this day in which you came out from Egypt, out of the house of slavery, for by a strong hand the Lord brought you out from this place. Moses was leading the people out of Egypt and into the desert after 400 years of slavery, he told them about a land filled with milk and honey land of great, bountiful blessing that God had promised them. It would be so different from their years of slavery. Deuteronomy 30:15-18 > Tell us before they went into the Promised Land, God, through Moses, said to the people See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil; 16 In that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou guest to possess it. 17 But if thine heart turn away, so

that thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them; 18 I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish, and that ye shall not prolong your days upon the land, whither thou passest over Jordan to go to possess it. God was giving them a choice. God wanted his people to enjoy the bounty of the Promised Land. But he didn’t make them accept it. The choice was theirs. God allows us to make choices! He tells us to choose to love Him. He also gives us the freedom to choose to: Obey Him or not. Choose Him or reject Him. Life Is About Making Solid Decisions > Everything we do in life is done by the choices we make. Our decision and choices have consequences. We as GOD children should never let anything stand in our way when it comes to God and our salvation. Before we ever make a decision in our lives, we need to go to GOD in prayer. Let us pray.

Introduction – We are a few weeks into the new year, and along with it we all have new goals, high aspirations and fresh hopes for the coming 50 plus weeks. • 2021 was an interesting year for us, while at the same time we en dured trying and difficult at times. • While we can’t know what is coming in the new year, we can f ind hope in God’s word, and ain tain a positive outlook that things will be better because we have Faith that God will come through in 2022. • Therefore, we wanted to share a few verses from the word of God to help us view 2022 from a pos itive, hopeful and God focused perspective. 1. Look Back On His Blessings – God is always faithful, and if we look back at 2021, we’ll find that he has been with us, and has been work ing in our lives – even when we don’t realize it! 1. James 1:17 - Every good gift and every perfect gift is from ove, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no vari-

ableness, neither shadow of turning. 2. Lamentations 3: 22-24 – Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new very morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; there fore, I will wait for him. 2. Focus On The Future, And God’s Plans For You – God has plans for our lives, and they’re plans to help us prosper! Jeremiah 29:11 – For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Proverbs 16:9 - 9 A man's heart deviseth his ay:but Lord directeth his steps. 3. Don’t Worry About What Is To Come - God is with us in the new year, and we don’t need to worry about anything when we focus on Him. He is our strength, he is with us and we have nothing to fear. • Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and suppli

cation with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Philippians 4:6 • Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will wake straight your aths. Proverbs 3:5-6 Don’t Worry About What Is To Come…because God will come through…in 2022! 4. Find Contentment In God This Year, And Give Thanks. As we ring in 2022, it’s important to remember that we can only find contentment in God. We also need to give thanks for all that He has done for us in 2021 and what he will do in 2022. • Philippians 4:11-13 - 11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be con tent. 12 Know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am in structed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I

can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. •1 Corinthians 15:57 – 57 But thanks be by Ronald White to God, which giveth us the victory through ourLord Jesus Christ. • Colossians 3:17 – 17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. God Will Come through…in 2022!!!
