Quality and Safe Care Newsletter Edition 25 March 2017
Welcome to the March issue of the Quality and Safe Care Newsletter. In this edition we are focusing on dignity following Dignity Action Day on 1st February 2017. Dignity Action Day is an annual opportunity for health and social care workers, and members of the public to uphold people's rights to dignity and provide a truly memorable day for people who use care services. The day is also a reminder for patients and relatives that staff have a right to be treated with dignity and respect too. Here are some ideas from around the country that took place this year: Members of staff were nominated by patients as “Dignity Stars” A wishing well was made by a member of staff and patients wrote their wishes for their care on pennies to place around the well. Digni-Tea parties were held around the country with some areas combining them with Valentines Day. Some were themed e.g. a 50’s style diner. Individuals were provided with a paper letter T to write on what dignity meant to them and these were then displayed on a large “Digni-T” that a member of staff had produced. A member of staff painted a large tree and patients were asked to write on leaves “what does dignity mean to me” these were then displayed on the tree. A Royal College of Nursing (RCN) training video “How would you feel” around privacy and dignity was shown.
Hand hygiene audit submissions Barriers to submitting hand hygiene audits Within the Infection Prevention & Control Strategy, we are required to monitor the submission of hand hygiene audits against the compliance framework. New from Nutricia -enteral tube connection system ENFit
Please note Nutricia have introduced a new enteral tube connection system, ENFit.
.
Nutricia ENFit™ enteral tubing connection system While tube mis-connections are rare, compatibility between enteral and other delivery systems, such as intravenous (IV) or luer based delivery systems, can pose a real risk to patient safety and can even be life-threatening. Therefore Nutricia participated (in collaboration with other leading global suppliers of enteral feeding devices) in the development of a new ISO standard for small bore connectors (803693), called ENFit™. This new enteral tubing connection system prevents mis-connections and ensures that only enteral nutrition can be delivered through enteral nutrition delivery systems. The ENFit™ system is enteral nutrition specific and is designed to be incompatible with non enteral delivery systems such as IV, hereby enhancing safety and reducing complexity. Please see the link below for details. http://www.nutriciaflocare.com/safety.php Posters demonstrating how to connect syringes and giving sets are available from the link above.

Patient Experience Team update
Patient Experience Team (PET) - Family Centred Care As the family centred care project (funded by charitable funds) nears its end in June, we are moving towards embedding the learning from this project. We are pleased to be able to share some initial information to support both staff members who are carers and also provide a useful resource for staff to share when they come across the many patients and carers seen in DCHS services. Below are the details of Carers in Derbyshire. Please use the link as a ‘one stop shop’ to find out about what is available for carers across Derbyshire. This has been co-created by a partnership of local health services (including DCHS), social care, voluntary sector organisations and unpaid carers and will be the place to access up to date information on all aspects of caring.
