WELCOME
 _____________

Are you ready to breathe? You have signed up for an experience designed to renew and revitalize your growth and development within the community of men and a caring organization.  It is common for leaders to become stuck, exhausted, or resistant when trying to cross over into bold new levels of growth. Life can feel heavy. To compensate, we may begin to hide or avoid parts of our lives. Other times we may overfunction or detach to make it through. Can you relate to these realities? Another significant challenge for men in our culture today is that most of the opportunities for meaningful relationships have been removed. We must learn how to forge and nurture relationships of trust that can provide the friendship, support, and development we need to function and grow as men.
Refuge offers us the opportunity to deepen bonds and renew our challenges together.  I hope that your trip will be more than an antidotal attempt to alleviate the symptoms and pressures of your life temporarily. I hope you take steps toward becoming more authentic with God, yourself, and others. And lastly, I hope you step with more intention.
You don’t have to use this guide. Consider it an optional resource if you want or need something to help structure your rest. Refuge trips are designed to offer a reprieve from the “have-to-do’s” of your everyday life so take the complete freedom to reach for whatever you need to help nourish your heart and soul.

Blessings,

CATCH UP TO SELF
 _____________

DAY ONE
There is enormous pressure for men in our culture to drive for success and achievement. Many leaders leverage their intelligence, competence, and discipline into positions of significant influence only to pay the price as their efforts begin to break down under overwhelming demands. With half their human system offline and the need to prove their worth by achieving results, fulfilling aspirations, and winning at all costs, they are left utterly exhausted.
It has likely taken a lot of time, energy, and effort for you to make it on this trip. The goal of today sounds simple but is by no means easy. Let go of all your expectations and demands and, instead, slow down and catch up to yourself first. Just take a gracious notice of your life and allow those observations to help you become more present with yourself, God, and others.

READ & RELATE
__________________________________________________________ Each day will unpack one of my (Rob) stories from our book: The Human Operating System: Recovering the Heart and Soul of Your Leadership.
I (Rob) was thirty-six years old when my wife walked into the room one day and asked if we could talk. Uhoh. This can’t be good, I thought, but I faked calm and answered, “Sure.” Sitting down on the edge of the bed, Natalie looked at me earnestly, “Rob, you’re a great dad to our four kids and a good husband to me. You’re working so hard to take care of us—building your business, finishing your master’s degree. You provide well, you love us, you’re totally committed to us.” I nodded cautiously, hearing a “but” coming. “But…I miss you. I want more of you. I’m lonely. So often you’re here physically…but you’re not really here. Do you think there could be another way for us to do life that would include me getting my husband back?” A hundred protests died on my lips as the weight of her words crashed in on me. In a moment of absolute clarity, I knew there was real truth here. As a South African, my genetic instinct for survival comes with a builtin message: Get busy and get it done. As a result, I was running on fumes, chasing the dream of success and security. Going out into the world to fight for a life, yet never coming home to actually live it. The mental and emotional exhaustion had about crushed me, and I was starting to resent climbing that ladder. It was costing me my family; it was costing me my soul. Something had to give…

 How can you relate?

HOW DO YOU FEEL?
__________________________________________________________ How do you feel? This question can be a strange one to answer for most people. What’s the point? Who cares? Many of us have learned to minimize, manage, or avoid having feelings so we can outperform, produce, survive, and cope. The problem is unchecked emotions often lead us to become numb and detached, and our hearts will only put up with such neglect for a while before something gives.
I want to help you recover your heart and be able to use your heart powerfully and unapologetically in every aspect of your life. I want this trip to invite more self-awareness and connection for you. The goal is to focus first on how to be formed so that you can then better perform.     It is hard to be present with yourself, God, and others by avoiding your feelings. God gave you a heart, and He even said to love Him with it. Practice being human today. Labeling and noticing your emotions is a powerful start to breathe in and catch up to yourself.

Exodus 33:11-15
The LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young aide Joshua son of Nun did not leave the tent. Moses said to the LORD, “ You have been telling me, ‘Lead these people,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me.

You have said, ‘I know you by name and you have found favor with me.’ If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favor with you. Remember that this nation is your people.”

The LORD replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” Then Moses said to him, “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.
“God never hurries. There are no deadlines against which he must work.
Only to know this is to quiet our spirits and relax our nerves.” ― A.W. Tozer (Pursuit of God)

Will your presence, grace, and your love wash over me.

Make me attentive to you spirit, to myself, and others.

LOOK BACK
 _____________

DAY TWO Every leader has faced, or will face, his unique battle with “Goliath.” We all have various wounds and challenges that emerge in our personal and professional lives at any given time. In what areas or situations are you being overwhelmed well beyond your current resources? What hard things are you carrying with you as you enter this retreat? Going forward usually requires going backward, at first. Day two offers you the invitation to reflect on a leadership challenge, painful moment, or failure that may haunt or taunt you somehow. We have the choice of whether to confront our “Goliath” with faith or fear. We hope that you would experience the presence of God in light of your battles and gain some clarity, courage, and strength throughout the day. Denial, Distractions, and Determination are the “three D’s” of survival. These tools can help or serve us for a season, but they will constrict your ability to live wholeheartedly. Naming your giants can allow you to breathe a little deeper, settle your anxious soul, and lead you into more rest.

Days later, I walked into a counselor’s office with some trepidation. Jeff asked why I was there, and I began to unpack my story. I told him about the conversation with my wife and all that led up to it, sprinkling in my selfdiagnoses in case he needed some help with that. He didn’t. Jeff was compassionate but direct. “You’ve cracked open the lid to your sewer drain, Rob, and you’re starting to see a few fragments that you’ve flushed down there. But you have no idea the parts of your unreconciled past that you have tried to bury. If you’re going to reclaim your heart and find the life you long for, it’s going to be a challenging journey.” He leaned back and paused. “You’ve come to this place for a reason, and now you have a decision to make. You can slap that lid closed, muster up some fresh determination, and power through a couple of more years. You’re young and driven; you can reengage your coping mechanisms to gut it out for a few more laps. Or you can open the lid wider, climb down into the sewer drain, and sort through all the discarded parts of your heart and soul until you come out the other end. You can do it now, or you can do it years from now. It’s up to you.” Taken aback, I felt like the Tinman in The Wizard of Oz; I had most certainly lost heart. Looking down, I began to realize how many of my body parts had been replaced with metal, trading the human parts to become more efficient, more powerful, more unfeeling. The world had demanded better, faster, and stronger from me. Who had I even become? I scarcely recognized the hard shell. But the inner voice was insistent. No, that’s a terrible idea, Jeff. Um, we’re not opening any sewer drains. I was hoping to pay for some tips on becoming a better husband so I could go home and win this thing! Maybe I was not clear. But the next voice gripped me like a vise. What if I do nothing, only to cycle back in a couple of years—and Natalie and the kids aren’t here anymore? I had to admit that possibility. Her question to me was definitely a cry for connection, a plea for change. Could I really ignore that? The cost would only increase… © 2021 TRANSFORMEDLEADER.COM | ROB MURRAY l REFUGE GUIDE #1

HOW DO YOU FEEL?
 __________________________________________________________

Learning how to identify your feelings will offer you the constructive opportunity to catch up to your heart and become more authentic as a man and leader. At this point, we can’t afford to keep moving forward without one of our greatest assets: our feelings. We have to slow down long enough to catch up with ourselves, reintegrate, and try this thing differently. We have been designed to live whole-hearted. Have you grown accustomed to leading with your feelings on life-support, then trying to resuscitate them just before you walk through the door at the end of the day to greet your family? Then maybe we can agree that it’s not working anymore. Perhaps it never really was. We can survive such dissociation for a while, but eventually, our hearts rebel. Either that or they fade away and start to wither.

Psalms 18:1-6

I love you, LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I have been saved from my enemies. The cords of death entangled me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me. The cords of the grave coiled around me; the snares of death confronted me. In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears.

“ You do not need to know precisely what is happening, or exactly where it is all going.
What you need is to recognize the possibilities and challenges offered by the present moment, and to embrace them with courage, faith and hope.”
 — Thomas Merton

God Elohim, I invite you into this day. Be with me and me with you. Will your power and strength encourage and resource me.
Will you remind me of your faithfulness and your sovereignty. Make me attentive to your spirit as you lead.

LEAN FORWARD
 _____________

DAY THREE

You are headed home soon enough. All leaders carry some measure of anxiety about their future, and maybe you have some of your own as you consider the journey back into civilization. It is common to try to medicate our fears with denial, control, hyperactivity, or force. What if there was another way? Trust, courage, and curiosity could offer you hope for a stronger tomorrow. Can we learn to trust God with our lives? Without courage, it is nearly impossible to venture beyond the comforts and safety of our fortified existence and defenses. Courage invites us to face and process our fears in ways that produce brave action. Curiosity can crack your heart open to new possibilities that fall outside your current assumptions and pathways. While curiosity will call you to try new things, courage and trust will fuel the way forward. Are you ready?

Story Continued - The Human Operating System: Recovering the Heart and Soul of Your Leadership

Jeff could see my inner turmoil as I negotiated furiously with myself. His words were compassionate but direct. “I understand, really. It’s okay. What I am suggesting is a lot. Why not go take another lap, and I’ll see you in a few years?” I knew he was right, but I was terrified of opening the lid. I continued to sit there deliberating. After a couple of moments, he leaned in close and gently whispered, “I’ll go with you. I’ll go with you.” And he did. With Jeff’s encouragement and Natalie’s support, I began my personal journey for authenticity, whole-heartedness, and transformation. It was one of the most important decisions of my life. You’ve probably read the onslaught of popular business books, and maybe you, too, have exhausted yourself trying to follow their advice. Crush it, kill it, drag it home, repeat! The message is usually some form of, “You’re going to be amazing if you’ll just work smarter and harder using our special sauce.” This is not that. The Human Operating System is as old as humanity. We didn’t invent it. We’ve just spent a lot of years trying to understand it and communicate it in ways that are transformative. And frankly, we’ve had to learn most of it the hard way. Fortunately, what we’re learning is changing our lives…and the lives of organizational leaders across the country. Friend, this is a time for courage. For bold moves and smart risks. It’s time to let go of the numbing comfort and predictability of the status quo and reach for more. There is more! So, let’s get started on understanding the magical interplay between your personal growth and your professional growth.
 Are you ready?

HOW DO YOU FEEL?
__________________________________________________________ Emotions are what make us human. Whether good or bad, they are a priceless part of the human experience. As we accept this reality, we begin a more constructive relationship with our feelings. There is a tendency to choose sides in the uncivil war between logic and emotion. In the midst of the somewhat challenging experience we call life, there are ways where head and heart can be reconciled to unlock the very beauty and goodness that make life meaningful. Healthy, strong, and centered leaders will be those who engage their hearts to enlarge the character and substance of their lives.

 __________________________________________________________

Psalms 1:1-6 Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,     which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—     whatever they do prospers.

Not so the wicked!  They are like chaff that the wind blows away.

Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

PRACTICING GRATITUDE

__________________________________________________________

PAUSE TO REFLECT & APPRECIATE

It can be easy to hurry off to the next thing we have on the calendar, failing to cultivate the goodness from our moments. Anne Voscamp says, “A life contemplating the blessings of Christ becomes a life acting the love of Christ.” Gratitude is a powerful force that men must learn to cultivate and practice. When we express our appreciation for moments and people, our souls are inspired to love more deeply.

RETURN WITH INTENTION

__________________________________________________________

As you make your way home, consider the men, the moments, and the memories that have shaped the last few days. Allow these things to germinate into hope, purpose, and Godly desire. We believe your time at Refuge can become more than temporary relief from the pressures of your life if you make an intentional decision to keep leaning towards rest and renewal in your everyday life. Deep change and transformation require that we consciously stay at the edge of our growth. This intention is difficult to do but costly not to. The world is desperately asking for leaders who are transformational, not transactional. You have invited your heart and soul to awaken.
Do you want to continue deepening your experience?
