Ring Mountain Day School Achievement. Character. Inspiration.
Curious and creative students thrive at Ring Mountain Day School. We put their questions at the heart of our progressive, flexible and challenging curriculum. In both multi-age Lower School classrooms and Middle School seminars, RMDS students are engaged in a rich and collaborative learning environment. In the warm community of a small school, parents and teachers partner to nurture children's minds and hearts through the critical elementary years.
We welcome families from all over the Bay Area. Approximately 30% of our students ride our San Francisco bus to school each day. We’re committed to putting an RMDS education within reach of all families, so we offer financial aid to over 30% of our students. At RMDS, students know there’s more than one path to achievement, and that being challenged makes them stronger and smarter. When learning moves beyond tests and textbooks, education is transformed. Come see the transformation at Ring Mountain Day School.
Small Classes
Big Opportunities There’s no back row in an RMDS classroom. We know that the best learning happens when students are seen, heard and challenged. That’s why our learning environment is scaled to give students the one-on-one attention they need to reach their full potential. At RMDS, teachers offer a level of differentiation that is only possible when they know their students intimately. In a combined kindergarten and first grade classroom, we challenge both the kindergartener reading chapter books and the first grader working on decoding. With no more than thirteen students in a classroom, every voice is heard. Sixth graders join around a table, comparing different ways to solve a math problem. Authentic learning happens when students know they make a difference.
Progressive Education
Engaged Minds Step into any RMDS classroom and you’ll see students asking questions, building projects, taking risks, and making discoveries. From hands-on experiments in Lower School Science classes to philosophical discussions at the seminar table in Middle School English, RMDS offers the progressive approach that engages and motivates students. We teach our students to ask as many questions as they answer. Student voices and interests are at the heart of our classrooms and curriculum. At RMDS, kids grapple with real-world challenges that defy easy answers. They develop voices that are ready to speak up and speak out. With a rich foundation of critical thinking and creative inquiry, our learners become ready to be tomorrow’s leaders.
Kindness Matters
Connections Count Children are works in progress. At the same time they’re working to master the foundational academic skills they’ll use for their whole life, they’re also challenged to build the character traits that ensure longterm success. Students and teachers form strong connections as they work together for multiple years. From this base of trust and respect, students develop the resilience and grit to tackle the essential work of growing up. At RMDS, explicit instruction in social and emotional competencies gives students the tools they need to enrich their learning. Weekly mindfulness practice builds empathy, patience and gratitude. Individually, students learn to be aware of their own emotions and articulate their feelings. Together, they work to resolve conflicts peacefully and independently.
Challenging Curriculum
Inspired Growth From the science of solar cells to the reasons for revolutions, RMDS is committed to teaching relevant curriculum that focuses on real-world issues and develops the 21st century skills students need to succeed. Multi-modal teaching strategies employ visual, auditory, and kinesthetic cues to boost learning. Lower School classrooms use time-tested curricula such as Responsive Classroom, Bridges in Mathematics, and Readers’ and Writers’ Workshops. Middle School classes make connections across disciplines to link academics to the real world. Spanish instruction begins in kindergarten and culminates in an eighth grade trip to a Spanish-speaking country. With weekly instruction in music, art, and drama, RMDS students receive an education that propels them beyond the classroom.
“I’m Confident I’ll Find My Way”
Our Graduates At graduation, each of our eighth graders takes three minutes to address their parents, schoolmates and teachers. We ask them to reflect on their time at RMDS. Their words capture our unique community. One graduate wrote, “I found space to be myself and follow my passions inside the school and outside the classroom.” Another reflected, ”I love getting up early in the morning because I get to go to my second home. And I love going to learn in a place where I feel comfortable.”

“Ring Mountain Day School didn’t necessarily change me; it helped me change myself. All I needed was a little push towards making myself the person that I am today.” RMDS Class of 2016 RMDS alumni report that small classes, personal connections with teachers, and discussion-based learning give them an advantage in high school over students coming from larger schools. Our graduates go on to competitive public and independent high schools in the Bay Area and beyond. Members of the classes of 2015 and 2016 attended schools including The Bay School, Drew School, Dunn School, Marin Academy, Redwood High School, St. Ignatius College Prep, Tamalpais High School, and The Urban School.
