Lesson 3
Getting Ready
Saul of Tarsus
Faithful Instruction Teacher Focus Before you prepare for this class, read Philippians 3:4b-6, Acts 22:3-5 and Acts 9:1-22. Consider the radical nature of Saul’s conversion. He was a persecutor of Christians who was on his way to obtain approval to imprison and punish even more disciples. (See also Acts 26:10.) Yet God moved his heart to change him into one of the greatest leaders in the early church. You were in some way a “Saul” before you were converted in that you also made radical decisions and changes in order to become a disciple. List specific ways that God worked to soften your heart to allow you to change to be used by him. Be prepared to share these thoughts with your students.
Teacher Tips The goal of this lesson is to help your students realize that God can change hearts and situations in radical ways. None of us is the same after we have allowed God to mold us and discipline us. Today’s activity will help your students catch a vision for who they would like to become and how they would like to change. Each student will be creating a coat of arms. Two of the symbols on the shield will represent qualities that they feel are current strengths. The other two symbols represent changes that they would like to see develop in their characters. As an example to your students, create your own coat of arms prior to class using symbols for your own life and the goals you have for change.
Preclass Activity Antonym Explosion When people become disciples, they become the extreme opposite of what they have been. This exercise will get the students thinking about one thing being opposite of another thing.
Materials Used For each student: • pen or pencil For the teacher: • lined paper • CD or cassette player • CD or cassette with instrumental music
Instructions 1. As the students arrive, assign them to sit in groups of two or three. 2. Give each group several sheets of lined paper and pens or pencils. 3. Instruct the groups to brainstorm together and write down as many antonyms as they can. Explain that an antonym is a word that means the opposite of another. For example: “black/white” or “on/off.” 4. Play instrumental music in the background to help get the creative juices going. 5. Instruct them to keep the antonym lists for later because they will be asked to share their answers.

Lesson 3
Getting Ready
Saul of Tarsus
Starting Up Welcome and Singing Call the students together in a circle. Welcome everyone by name, being sure to recognize anyone who is visiting. Let them know how glad you are to see them and how much you looked forward to being with them. Sing a few great songs.
Opening Prayer Who would like to s ay a prayer to start today’s time together? Let a few students lead the prayer. Encourage the students to mention missing students, special church activities, illnesses and gratitude for the chance to be together.
Victories Take the time to have the students share about the challenges they were given at the end of last week’s class. Did everyone complete the challenge? How did it go? What fea rs did you face as you met the challenge to put the lesson into practice? How did everyone do with having consistent quiet times? Would an yone like to share some thing they learned? Praise and encourage all the students’ ef forts, especially noting any area of significant growth. Offer help and suggestions so they can have even more victories in the coming week.
Good News from the Kingdom Materials Used For the teacher: • 1 copy of “Good News from the Kingdom” • globe or map of the world
Instructions Now let’s take a f ew minutes to share “Good News from the Kingdom.” Be excited as you read about what is happening around the world. Have a globe or map ready, pointing out the location as you share. Remind your students that the kingdom of God is worldwide and that the victories of our brothers and sisters in other countries can inspire us and spur us on.

Lesson 3
Saul of Tarsus
Getting Into God’s Word Select several volunteers to read the following passage aloud to the class, dividing the reading as shown: • Acts 9:1-9 • Acts 9:10-16 • Acts 9:17-22
Scripture Study Materials Used For the teacher: • extra Bibles Ask different groups of students to share three or four of the antonyms from their lists. Af ter they share, explain that they are going to study the conversion of the apostle Paul. Explain that, in his old life, he was the extreme opposite of a disciple. Ask the students to share words or phrases that would describe someone who was the opposite of a disciple. Explain to the students that they will be looking at Paul’s life as an example of how God changed the heart of someone who radically opposed the disciples and how he allowed the man to become a disciple himself. Have the students open their Bibles to Acts 9:1-22 and read along with you. Ask • Before Saul met Jesus, why do you think he ac ted and felt the way he did about disciples? (Get input from the students, then explain Paul’s background.) Read Philippians 3:4b-6 and Acts 22:3-5 aloud to the class. Explain that Paul was a Pharisee from the line of Benjamin. He had been taught by a great Jewish teacher, Gamaliel, and had strictly obeyed the requirements of the Law of Moses. He persecuted the church zealously because he believed it was against the teachings of God. He was convinced that his persecution of the church was right. Read Acts 26:10. • Having heard this, do you think that Saul loved God? (Yes, but he wasn’t going about it in the right way.) • If you were there, would you ha ve shared your faith with Saul? Why or why not?
Preteens 17-3-4 Power to Change
Ask • When did Saul change? Why did he change? • What might Saul ha ve been thinking about during the three days he was blind? (how badly he had treated the disciples / what Jesus had said to him / what might happen to him) • What do you think Ananias was thinking about as he traveled to meet Saul? (not sure about Saul / wondered if he was in danger / wondered what he would say) • What if Ananias had given in to his fears and not gone to see Saul? (The church probably would not have had one of its greatest leaders.) • What does Saul’s conversion tell you about who can change and become a disciple? (anyone) Just as Saul went through a sudden and radical change in his life, so must we face and welcome change (sometimes sudden and sometimes not) in our lives. God can do great things with our lives when we allow him to work on our hearts, molding us int o what he needs us to be. All he needs is for us, lik e Saul, to have willing hearts that want to ser ve him.

Lesson 3
Saul of Tarsus
Getting Into God’s Word
Activity Who Will I Become? The students will create a coat of arms depicting their character strengths and their hopes for growth and change.
Materials Used For each student: • pencil • 1 piece of black construction paper, 81/2" x 11" • 1 piece of plain white paper For the teacher: • construction paper • markers/colored pencils • scissors • glue • swatches of cloth/string/yarn/wallpaper, etc. Reproducible Pages: • Page A, 1 copy for each student • Page B, 1 copy for each student
Winter 2
Instructions 1. Give each student a copy of Reproducible Pages A (Coat of Arms) and B (Symbols), pieces of plain white paper and a pencil. 2. Explain to the students that, in medieval times, a family created a coat of arms that showed in symbols the strengths and uniqueness of that family. Tell them that Reproducible Page B shows many of the symbols that were used to signify different characteristics of the family. 3. Tell the students that they will each be creating their own coat of arms, but that their coat of arms will have a different meaning. In their version, two of the sections will symbolize strengths they feel they currently possess, and two will signify the changes they would like God to help them make. Let the students know that, while they may have strengths in sports or academics, you would like them to focus on strengths in their characters (i.e., fruit of the Spirit). 4. The students may copy the symbols from Reproducible Page B or create their own symbols (“strength” can be shown as barbells, “faith” by a cross or a Bible, etc.). Each section does not need to be limited to a single symbol. For example, “loving” can be shown as a section full of different size hearts. 5. Give the students access to all the creative materials and allow them to get to work. You can set a creative atmosphere by playing the cassette or CD from the preclass activity. 6. Take some time to allow several of the students to share their coats of arms and what the symbols mean. Share your own as well.

Lesson 3
Scripture Memory For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10
Materials Used For the teacher: • 10 index cards, 3" x 5" • pen or marker • stopwatch Reproducible Pages: • Page C, 1 copy for each student
Preparation Write out the memory verse on the ten index cards, breaking it down as follows: • (Card 1) For we • (Card 2) are God’s workmanship, • (Card 3) created in Christ Jesus • (Card 4) to do • (Card 5) good works, • (Card 6) which God • (Card 7) prepared • (Card 8) in advance • (Card 9) for us • (Card 10) to do.
Instructions 1. Have the students open their Bibles to Ephesians 2:10 and silently practice memorizing the verse on their own for two minutes. 2. Have the students close their Bibles.
3. Place the index cards with parts of the memory verse written on them face down and out of order. 4. Have the students sit in a circle around the cards. 5. Ask for a volunteer to race to put the cards in order. Time the student with a stopwatch. 6. Give other students the opportunity to put the cards in order, timing each one with a stopwatch. 7. The winner is the student with the shortest time. 8. Finish by giving each student a copy of Reproducible Page C (Scripture Memory) and by having all the students repeat the verse together.
Weekly Challenge and Snack Time If your students bring a snack, allow them to eat while you explain to them the challenge for the week. The challenge for this week is to decide on an area in which you would like to make an radical change; that is, doing the opposite of what you are doing now. For example: rather than putting of f doing your homework, the opposite might be that you come in from school and immediately sit down and start on it. Share with someone else in the class what it is that you will change. Talk with your pa rtner during the week and encourage each other to “do the opposite.”
Conclusion End the class with a prayer.
Weekly Challenge Decide on an area in which you would like to make a radical change. During the week, call a friend in the class to encourage each other as you strive to “do the opposite.” Pray together about your decisions.

Saul of Tarsus
(supplement)
Faithful Instruction Teacher Focus Pray about this lesson’s impact. Read through 2 Corinthians 5:17, 1 John 2:6 and Colossians 3:5-17. Think about what it means to be a new creation in Christ. This lesson will show your students that those who make the decision to walk as Jesus did will have great change obvious in their lives. Pray for the students to understand and appreciate the need for change.
Teacher Tips It is important to have specific examples of change to share with the students. You and your assistant teachers have great examples to share from your lives about what it means to walk with Christ. Talk with your assistants about these during the week and share them with the class as appropriate.
Preclass Activity New Creations The students will complete a crossword puzzle that emphasizes the characteristics of a new life in Christ.
Materials Used For each student: • pen or pencil For the teacher: • extra Bibles Reproducible Pages: • Page D, 1 copy for each student
Instructions 1. As the students arrive, give each a pen or pencil and a copy of Reproducible Page D (New Creations). 2. Have the students do the puzzle individually. 3. Lesson 3
Saul of Tarsus
Getting Into God’s Word (supplement)
Scripture Study Materials Used For the teacher: • extra Bibles Have the students turn in their Bibles to 2 Corinthians 5:17. Select a volunteer to read this passage aloud to the class. Ask • What do you think it means to be “in Christ”? (be a disciple / be baptized / be forgiven) • Why does being in Christ make one a new cr e ation? (now live like Christ / don’t live the way once did / imitate Christ instead of the world / Christ gives power to change) • Why is it impor tant to live a new life instead of continuing in the old life when someone becomes a disciple? (old life characterized by sin / worldliness / not focused on godly things) Have the students turn to 1 John 2:6. Select another volunteer to read. • What does it mean to walk as Jesus did? (do what he did / imitate his whole life / love God the way he did / teach others) • What would happen if we claimed to live like Jesus, but our actions didn’t show it? What would that say to others about our faith? (It wasn’t very strong. / People would think we were hypocrites. / People wouldn’t be attracted to following Jesus.)
Preteens 17-3-10 Power to Change
Finally, have the students turn to Colossians 3:5-17. Select a student to read verses 5-11. • What do we have to do to put sin to death? (make a decision / know what doesn’t please God / know what pleases God / ask for help / read the Bible / pray) • These verses mention many sinful actions. Think about seeing these cha racteristics in any person. Are any of them attractive or appealing? (no) • How does God feel about these things? (hates them) • Can anyone walk as Jesus did if he is not daily changing in his cha racter to be more like Jesus? (no) Select another student to read verses 12-17. • This passage s ays that when we follow Jesus, our character should change for the bet ter. It’s almost like getting new clothes! What a re some of the qualities God expects to see in our “new life”? compassion patience peace kindness bearing with one another wisdom humility forgiveness gratitude gentleness love Change may be hard, but when we change to be like Jesus, it is alw ays a change for the better.
