SAUTI YETU OUR VOICE, TODAY & EVERYDAY

WELCOME TO THE HUB SDG STUDENT HUB | STRATHMORE UNIVESRITY

editor's notes Sauti Yetu is an e-magazine that will seek to amply the voices of the youth and more specifically Strathmore Students when it comes to matters of SDGs and sustainability. The magazine will be a platform where one can share any content that includes but is not limited to articles, art pieces, songs, photos and dance pieces. Each issue will have a theme based on what is happening around the world in that month. Additionally, the magazine is our way of working to see how we can bring sustainability and art together; examining how can we use our creative abilities to raise awareness about the SDGs in the pursuit of change.

WELCOME TO THE HUB The SDG Students Program is an initiative under the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN)Youth. SDSN Youth was launched in 2015, three years after SDSN was launched by former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Mon, with the aim of empowering youth globally to create practical sustainable solutions. Additionally, the student program hopes to equip students in higher education institutions with knowledge, skills and pathways to action to be effective agents of change. The SDG Student Hub is the space where university students can come and learn about., engage with and act upon the SDGs.

The Strathmore University SDG Student Hub is the only Hub in Kenya under SDSN Youth Kenya. The Strathmore University Hub is full of vibrant members who are ready to take action and play a significant role in the decade of action. The Hub has various programs and activities that allow its members to interact with the SDGs in unique and interesting ways. In 2021, the Hub hopes to launch new programs that will force members to be critical thinkers, innovative people and agents of change in their communities.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also referred to as the Global Goals, were adopted by all United Nations Members States in 2015. The SDGs serve as a call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and esnure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030.

They are 17 Goals that cover societal, environmental and economic issues. The uniqueness of these goals is that they are integrated meaning that action in one will affect the outcome in others.

Through the pledge to Leave No One Behind, countries have committed to fast-track progress for those furthest behind first. That is why the SDGs are designed to bring the world to several life-changing ‘zeros’, including zero poverty, hunger, AIDS and discrimination against women and girls.

EMPOWER THE WOMEN AROUND YOU THE THEME FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH AT THE HUB WAS "EMPOWER THE WOMEN AROUND YOU". THIS WAS INSPIRED BY THE FACT THAT MARCH IS CONSIDERED WOMEN RIGHTS HISTORY MONTH COUPLED WITH INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY ON 8TH MARCH.

SDG 5 GENDER EQUALITY Ending all discrimination against women and girls is not only a basic human right, it’s crucial for a sustainable future; it’s proven that empowering women and girls helps economic growth and development. But although there are more women than ever in the labour market, there are still large inequalities in some regions, with women systematically denied the same work rights as men. Sexual violence and exploitation, the unequal division of unpaid care and domestic work, and discrimination in public office all remain huge barriers. Climate change and disasters continue to have a disproportionate effect on women and children, so do conflict and migration. It is vital to give women equal rights land and property, sexual and reproductive health, and to technology and the internet. Today there are more women in public office than ever before, but encouraging more women leaders will help achieve greater gender equality.

THE HIDDEN SUPERHERO By Purity Kibaki

"When God created man and woman, he was thinking, 'Who shall I give the power to give birth to the next human being?' And God chose woman, and this is big evidence that women are powerful," said Pakistan Nobel Peace Prize winner, Malala Yousafzai. I will second her for three reasons. Firstly, women, in this case, mothers are the core pillars of our families, they take care of them, encourage them, feed them and support them, especially to children. When a child is born, the first thing the innocent confused being does is to cry for entering the cold world wondering, “Why am I leaving ‘Paradiso,’ my world?” Where it’s so peaceful, everything is ready-made and comfort is at its peak as they are having fun kicking and throwing some tiny legs which are seen as magic when a mother-to-be says, 'he is kicking.' That I call the beautiful 'Baby World.' On the other hand, as the baby world is exclusive looking like a sweet animation on Baby TV or extravagant like ‘BOSS BABY’, someone’s daughter is screaming, rolling on the ground, sitting in a million positions per hour, having to eat a lion’s share and unfortunately, still working in the farm, doing house chores, taking care of the other children and the baby's daddy. At that moment we see as if it is normal and many of us, kids especially, still ask mama for all we need. But it is mama, she always does these things for us. ‘Ma`, I am hungry.’ Ma` the teacher said she wants to see you tomorrow,’ the same ma` is expected to prepare kids for school and breakfast for the family, not forgetting dinner for daddy, helping Lisa with homework, and keeping the home clean. After the morning duties ma` goes to work, to the office, farm, or her grocery store. Who will take care of Ma`? That's what is called the strength of a woman. Secondly, ‘when we vest in women and girls, we are investing in the people who invest in everyone else,’ Melinda Gates an American Philanthropist once said. Women right from a young age when they are called girls are seen to be very loving and caring. You can see that right from the point a young girl takes care of her doll. Gives the doll a name, never wants to be distant from the doll, cleans her, sings and dances with her, combs her hair, sleeps beside her, and funny enough shares her meal with the doll, you will see the young girl moving the dolls chin and jaws momentarily indicating chewing, her cute doll is eating and 'will become big like me,' to herself she says. That love is portrayed throughout for that is the same way a woman takes care of her child.

The love a girl child is shown as she grows up is shared thrice as much throughout her life. The only problem is, the kindest-hearted people are taken advantage of the most. She will share the love with classmates, peers, colleagues, and children. Another aspect is financial, COVID-19 has dimmed many livelihoods and this has forced many families to shun unnecessary spending and focus on what matters most to them. If a woman is empowered on spending or is knowledgeable on the subject, her family will even improve financially as COVID-19 has poignantly taught us on financial planning and personal finance. A short survey of randomly asking people on the street the prices of basic home products like the price of 500g of salt, 100g of tea leaves, and baby powder I once did, proved that 68% of the correct answers came from women. It is therefore very important to educate the girl child, encourage equity and empower women to save the next generation for a mother is the first teacher to her child. Lastly, gender equity has been among the most discussed topics especially this month as we celebrated International Women`s Day. The corporate world is creating space for women in management not forgetting the government with the two-thirds gender rule in parliament and most recently, the first woman vice-president of the biggest power on the planet, the United States. The nature of a woman, like most mothers, does focus on the future. They always want their families to have something to feed on. Taking this to the corporate world and leadership will surely see a better economic future for the country and world at large. Let us embrace our women, they are our daughters, sisters, wives, teachers, role models, and mothers. Make the world a better place, treat everyone equally and empower the girl child for what we do now will determine the future, the next generation to be sired by the same women and girls. Everyone has a superwoman in their life. Nature the young ones to be your grandchild’s superwoman.
