Introducing young kids to robotics and STEM Throughout our journey in robotics, we have gathered a lot of knowledge from various domains, especially STEM and even though at the beginning everything was hard, as we worked more and more, things got easier, we learned everything much faster and managed to come up with many more ideas. But what we realized from our earliest months as a FIRST robotics team is that we have a moral and civic duty to share what we learn with children in our community and introduce them to robotics and STEM because it represents the future and we want the next generations not only to be prepared, but to be a part of it. We started organizing events with children from schools in Prahova, showcasing our activity and our robot, letting them get a better understanding of what robotics actually means and how they can find their future in it. It was not easy task because we had no experience with teaching or giving presentations, but as we did it again and again it became natural.

Kids are curious by nature, maybe a little hesitant when confronted with something new, but they would always want to know more about how you can make a robot, how long does it take, how to work in a team. They have questions and they want to interact with you and the robot. So the most important thing when introducing kids to STEM and robotics is making sure that your presentation or workshop is interactive, that you can connect with the kids, that they see and touch and drive the robot. Nothing sparks their interest as much as a hands on experience. Another important thing when working with kids is to disguise everything as a game because every child loves playing and it is the best way to make sure the information will get to them. When they play with the robot, it is more likely that they would go to their parents enthusiastic about their day and with a desire to try to build a robot themselves.

Sharing our experience and knowledge with the younger generation is one of the best parts of being in a FIRST TECH CHALLENGE robotics team, because we have a chance to open their mind and their horizons.
