his October, I saw my third year with the Inspired group as Managing Director of Reddam House Gauteng, KZN and New Schools. The remarkable growth in the group has come with its own wonderful opportunities for our students and staff.
One of these opportunities was announced in September of this year - Inspired by Berklee. The partnership with Berklee will develop contemporary music, dance, theatre and creative education programmes and experiences at participating schools. The “Artists in Residence” at Inspired schools will grant access to Arts Professors for talented Inspired students and include several artist visits per academic year, designed to explore specific topics within fields of music, dance or theatre. Visiting faculty members will work with Inspired students and teachers to create original works, with access to award-winning online educational experiences. There will also be a programme of professional development and certification for Inspired’s performing art teachers, including an annual five-day professional development workshop, one-on-one teacher development, discussions and cooperation on performing arts summer programmes. Another benefit of a being a part of an international education company is that our students have an opportunity to be part of Inspired Schools’ Global exchange programme. This will give students an opportunity to visit and be part of one of our participating schools in either Africa, Latin America, Europe or
the Asia-Pacific schools. Opportunities to attend one of our Inspired Summer or Winter Camps, mostly in Europe, will allow our students to travel, network and make friends with students from around the globe. Besides our international opportunities, I have been so pleased to see the growth of our own schools in KZN and Gauteng. The ‘Clash of the Clans’ has been a phenomenal success with our Reddam and Redford schools competing across various sporting codes. Reddam House, Ballito officially opened in January this year. The campus dominates the Ballito area and is truly a spectacular school. Reddam House, Umhlanga joined Ballito and the Gauteng schools, officially falling under my leadership. Reddam House, Helderfontein moved into their new College building and welcomed the opening of the Sports Centre. As 2019 draws to a close, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our parents for their continued belief in the Reddam House schools; to all the teachers for their commitment and dedication to our students; to the support and administration staff for their enthusiasm and the superb effort they make each day; to our students, who are the reason we are here. Keep dreaming and be inspired.

s the year 2019 draws to a close, we celebrate God’s faithfulness for 25 years in private education. Ten of those years as Bedfordview Christian College - the foundation of what we are today - and the ensuing 15 years as Reddam House, Bedfordview. Looking back, it’s hard not to acknowledge God’s hand in our journey.
From renting Sunday school facilities to purchasing our own land and building the BCC Campus and then using the BCC Campus as collateral to build the Main Campus. From travelling to Gerdview Public Swimming pool and Mandeville Sports Club for swimming training and galas to having our own pool. From renting sports fields from Bedfordview Country Club to establishing our own fields and having our own AstroTurf. From one “computer centre” to four fully-equipped computer centres. From typewriters and donated computers loaded with DOS software to Microsoft and laptops; from chalkboards to smart boards. From 42 children at our opening in 1984 to 1450 children today; from four teachers, one cleaner, one assistant and a secretary to 130 teachers, 20 cleaners, 13 groundsmen, four drivers, 11 admin staff and two estate managers.
REDDAM HOUSE BEDFORDVIEW 2019
From an isolated school to nine Reddam and three Reddford schools in South Africa, Reddam Sydney and Reddam Berkshire to being part of a global network of 52 schools on five continents under the Inspired banner, creating partnerships with Berklee College of music and performing arts and offering exchange programmes to sister schools. A sincere thank you to our incredible teaching and support teams - for their dedication to our vision and the long hours they devote willingly in helping us achieve this dream - in the classroom, on the sports field, through the arts faculty and a huge variety of extra-curricular activities.
Bruce Lee, considered by commentators, critics, media and other martial artists to be the most influential martial artist of all time, observed that: “A goal is not always meant to be reached, it often serves simply as something to aim at.” The vision of Reddam, Bedfordview has always been exactly that - always exploring new, exciting and better ways of teaching – to keep abreast of the latest in best educational practice. Always stretching ourselves further to improve what we offer as an educational team, as a school and as the Inspired group. Out of this quest, most recently, exciting alliances with the Northern Consortium of the United Kingdom (NCUK) initiative and Berklee College of Music developed. The NCUK initiative provides the opportunity for graduating Reddam matriculants to complete a six-month bridging course to bring them up to A levels. On passing the course, they are guaranteed entry to numerous UK universities for the commencement of study in September of that year. As we move into our 26th year of operation, may we continue to keep ‘aiming’ for our goal and, in so doing, constantly stay motivated to seek first-rate ways of doing what Reddam, Bedfordview excels at - nurturing individuals to be the best version of themselves that they can be. Crafting confident young men and women, equipped to face the world and everything it throws at them! How incredibly proud you make us and how worthwhile the effort! In closing, the management of Reddam House, Bedfordview would like to wish every one of our families an amazing December break. Enjoy this precious family time together. To our Christian families, we wish you a very blessed Christmas! May 2020 be a year of exponential growth, peace, abundance and blessing! Thank you!

2019 also proved to be a year of firsts. We had our first-ever major drama production in the college, which will now alternate every third year with a dance production and major musical. Antigone was a remarkable production, well supported and enjoyed by all involved. We also had our first adventure hike where a group of students and staff took a three-day trip to Waterval Boven to complete the overnight adventure. A tough experience indeed but enjoyed by all and, for most, it was their first step towards a President’s Award. Another first was our inter-school e-sports event, the brainchild of Mr. Kichenbrand and Viljoen. Over 200 gamers from several Johannesburg schools competed in a diversity of PC and Playstation games. It was a great event and plans for a bigger event next year are already afoot. A first on the sports field was achieved by our first team netball girls and coach Miss Van Dyk, who not only won their league, then the districts, then winning at JOMO to reach the Gauteng regional com-
Academically our students continued to excel in all areas, and it was thanks to our exceptionally committed staff that we participated in so many field trips, visits and out-of-class learning experiences. This year, entrepreneurship across subjects and grades, was a focus. We had our usual Games and Market Days, but we also ran an entrepreneurship conference where business leaders from our community shared their stories and advice. We also invited several game-changing guest speakers to the school including best-selling authors talking about ‘your inner game’ and a soon-to-be astronaut and Mars colonist, Dr Adriana Marais, who challenged our students to produce creative solutions to real problems. The success of any school lies squarely with its staff complement. At Reddam we have a remarkable team of educators, who are passionate and motivated and love what they do. Thank you to our management teams and all our staffs for many hours they devote to their preparation, coaching, mentoring, teaching, thoughtfulness and commitment to extracting the best out of every single student in their care. To our students thank you for your efforts this year and all the work you invest in every aspect of the school. Thank you to the parents for your constant support. May God continue to bless our school.

In caring for others, our students also have made an impact this year. Our community service initiatives have grown tremendously. We supported Lambano children’s sanctuary and Elandsvallei Red cross old age home, but we also collected over 1500 sanitary towels with the JJC, we made over 13 000 sandwiches for Mandela Day, conducted extra lessons with over 50 students and dredged certain areas of the Jukskei River using buckets. Students also produced over 100 knitted squares, made seven fleece blankets and fried 500 burgers and 250 pancakes and donated over 1000 eco-bricks. We ran a netball clinic, painted outdoor furniture and planted a garden. Our Santa’s Shoebox initiative produced 274 boxes chockfull of essential items and our ‘Pimp my Crèche’ team helped restore Ubuhle School in Bronkhorstspruit. What a busy but exciting year.
On the stage our students’ dancing, singing and acting enthralled the audiences in ‘Sullivan Shaw’s Spectacular’ and with talent of this calibre in both the Prep School and College we really are looking forward to the Inspired schools’ partnership with Berklee College of Music next year.
REDDAM HOUSE BEDFORDVIEW 2019
Though the year we discussed various influential people in history who really changed things up. Nelson Mandela, William Wilberforce and Mother Teresa being among them. Now, none of these people were exceptionally talented or gifted, yet each one of them changed the game completely and brought a lasting impact upon the people around them.
petition, an accomplishment never-before achieved by Reddam. This year, in the Preparatory School, we awarded ‘Game Changer of the week’ awards for the display of exceptional game-changing behaviour and it was encouraging to see that we presented over 143 awards - a testament to our students’ commitment. We also enjoyed an exceptional year on the sports field with our U11 girls’ netball team winning their league and then our U11 girls’ soccer team narrowly losing the Discovery Cup finals. Our rugby and hockey teams also enjoyed remarkable seasons, with many of the teams emerging unbeaten. We also had a combined Reddam team participate in the Mauritian rugby 7s Tournament.

During my time at Reddam, there have been many moments that shaped me as a person, and they will always be remembered. Whilst at Reddam, I was provided with the tools and opportunities to excel academically and on the sports field. One of the most honourable achievements was when I was appointed to the Judiciary for 2019. Thanks to all at Reddam, this has truly been a second home for me.” Stephanie - “This year, serving as a member of the Judiciary,

hey say that time flies when you are having fun, and this year was certainly no exception. In true Reddam style, we began the year with camps, where old friendships were rekindled, and new friendships established. It was also a time for teachers to “try to take the holidays out of the children” and get them geared up for the challenges facing them for the year ahead.
The theme for the year was GAME CHANGERS. Employees helped with the introduction of the theme by shifting out of their comfort zones and with honest effort tried to pull off an intricate dance routine. It is what Reddam is known for: give it a go, have some fun and add some value…
Sullivan Shaw’s Spectacular was an amazing whole school play. We are still one of the few schools that still involve the whole student body. It is most gratifying to see the shy, gangly, and uncoordinated all pull together to help make the play the success that it was. We have also been busy extramurally. Concours d’ Art is always popular in Term three, where our talented culturalists can show their talents. On the sports front, our netballers and footballers enjoyed successful and memorable tours down to George and Umhlanga. The cricketers toured to the Cape and some rugby boys were selected for an Inter-Reddam Rugby tour to Mauritius. As our sister schools have continued to develop and establish themselves, we are now participating afresh in the Gathering of the Tribes (with Waterfall, Helderfontein, and Reddford Schools). Each campus will now host different sporting codes to help develop our brand and sense of community among our Reddam family. These events were really enjoyed by all this year and, for the record, we are still at the top of the standings. Our community has continued to support the Mini City Councillors; we are still one of the leading schools when it comes to supporting the blanket drive, Easter eggs and sandwich collections. In today’s tough times these are valuable lessons of which our children constantly need to be reminded.
Amidst all this activity, we have still managed to get the most important task down - that of a strong focus on Academics. Classrooms have been a hive of activity with the inclusion of the odd field trip. To help those students who are struggling a little or those who are trying to just improve their results, we have rolled out the ‘Leaders are Readers’ programme the effectiveness of which will be evaluated at the conclusion of this year. Finally, it has been a busy, but fulfilling, year with few challenges. I need to credit the TEAM at Reddam; as they really have delivered in all aspects of the school. There is never a quiet moment; as soon as the one task is completed, it is straight on to the next. They wear many hats i.e. mothers, wives, taxi drivers ... and yet are still able to come to school every day to teach, coach, mother, counsel and help create the caring environment that helps make Reddam special. Thank you, parents, for the privilege of choosing us for your child’s education and allowing us to share in your life’s journey. I hope we can all enjoy a little rest and spend some time together during the holidays to prepare for an exciting 2020.

UPFRONT VALEDICTORY ADDRESS
GOOD EVENING LADIES, GENTLEMEN and to my dear grade, the Reddam House class of 2019. I am truly privileged to address and merely be in the presence of such a wonderful group of people that is the class of 2019 and, more importantly, my greatest friends. We are gathered here tonight along with our proud parents, family members, friends and teachers to celebrate a huge milestone, the end of an incredibly long, yet remarkable, journey - our schooling career. The wise words of street poet, philosopher and my good friend, Drake best describes our journey, “Started from the bottom, now the whole team here.” It is important to acknowledge two of our beloved teammates who could not be here tonight,
them, we would also not have reached this point in our lives. A phrase that comes to mind in describing the Reddam teachers is the phrase “the best.” The aspects that contribute to our teachers being the best is not only limited to them possessing tremendous abilities to teach but extend beyond the classroom and to the strong relationships they have formed with our grade, the life lessons they have taught us and the endless amounts of time, care and support they have given us. Therefore, I would like to extend our gratitude to all the staff members for everything that you have done for us as well as investing this portion of your lives to pass on your knowledge to us. Thank you to our Headmaster, Mr. Hazley, for running such a top-of-the-line school and for ensuring that we received
fairs, Mrs. Alberts. You really fit the saying, “I’m all ears”, because of your open-door policy, the passion and time that you devote to our student body and for always ensuring that our emotional wellbeing is intact. You have instilled discipline, respect and many other values that have become entrenched in our personalities. You are a pillar of support to the school and you have become like a second mother to me during my time serving on the Judiciary. Speaking of which, I am extremely honoured and privileged to have served as a member of the Judiciary and a Leinster House captain for 2019 and I thank each of you most sincerely. A fun fact about our grade is that we have had four grade controllers throughout our high

Our schooling career, specifically our high school career, has been rife with numerous victories and defeats. However, we have had the support, guidance and love from our parents from the very beginning all the way to this point and we would not be here without them. Therefore, I would like to thank all the parents on behalf of the class of 2019 for all the time, care, effort and money…I mean…intelligent business investments with which you have gifted us along with providing us with the opportunity to attend this spectacular school and receive an amazing education. Another factor of vital importance that has greatly impacted our lives is the staff members. They comprise of support staff, administrative staff, teachers and management staff and without
nothing short of the best in terms of our education and a positive environment in which to grow. Thank you for setting such a great example, always striving to inspire us and for teaching us to always do what is right. I hope you expect great things from the class of 2019, especially with our final exams because as you said to us at man camp, “Anything can happen.” Thank you to our Deputy Headmaster and Head of Academics, Mr. Jones. Sir, I think that it is about time that you find out about your nickname, the G-man. To me, the G stands for great, guidance, genius and genuine. These are some of the words that describe the long and exhausting hours that you endure both behind the scenes and in the public eye to ensure the high academic standard of the school. These words also outline the way you have conducted yourself with our grade. We will certainly remember your wittiness and entertaining sense of humour. Thank you, also, to Deputy Headmistress, and head of student af-
school career. So lastly, I would like to thank Mrs. Coetzee, Mr. Anaxagoras, Mr. Taylor and, last but certainly not least, Mrs. Meneghini. Thank you, ma’am, for putting up with all our shenanigans over the last two years or so and for also having an open-door policy. Thank you for all the guidance and support with which you have provided our grade. We really appreciate all the love, care, energy and time devoted. Your advice and many life lessons will continue to impact us into the future. I can undoubtedly say that you have become the school mother for our grade. Upon reflecting on our high school life, the class of 2019 shared many wonderful memories. It all began in grade 8, when we bonded at camp, especially during the evening with all the practical jokes that took place. Then we arrived back to be the masked minions of the school and we had to run around in our yellow T-shirts and masks while being sprayed with water guns by the executives.
Later that year we set out on leadership camp, jamming to the tunes of the 1999 hit, ‘I want it that way,’ by the Backstreet

We then proceeded to grade 9 where we began the year away at camp where we rode horses and some of the gentlemen, including myself, engaged in a rather friendly debate between the conveniently thin wall that separated our two rooms. Then we became seniors, being in grade 10, where we now began to focus our scope of study. During that year we planned and ran one of the best cultural days and we also embarked on the ‘Who am I’ camps. Grade 11 followed where we created and performed one of the best fashion shows and thereafter, we celebrated our fashion show’s commencement at the after-party and that was one crazy night!
The world is always changing, for example, our parents always told us to never get into a stranger’s car, today that is now known as Uber. Therefore, our school’s theme for the year, to be game-changers, was highly pertinent. I challenge each of us to go out and change the world for the better and all of us have the potential to do so. However, we need to jump over one last hurdle before we can change the world, our final exams. We all need to, in the words of one of my other good friends, Rihanna, “Work, work, work,

Later that year we set out on leadership camp, jamming to the tunes of the 1999 hit, ‘I want it that way,’ by the Backstreet Boys.
Many other memories were made in the classroom, on tours, during community service and breaks which included for me, football and the game called Germany. More memories were made on the sports field, on stage and when our grade won many touch rugby and rugby leagues and performed in two major productions, Big Fish and Sister Act. Our high school journey also saw the departure of some students from the school along with the arrival of new students. In terms of the students that joined us later in our journey, it has

Throughout our lives, we have - and will - experience mistakes, defeats and failures and as we tackle our final exams and then the world, I challenge each of us to learn from our mistakes. One teacher that Reddam was, unfortunately, unable to hire, Master Yoda, remarked, “The greatest teacher, failure is.” In closing, I would like to quote Tony Stark, Iron Man, “Part of the journey is the end.” We have now neared the end of our school life and we are the only people in control of how our journeys will progress. As our schooling journey comes to an end, we begin the rest of our lives and I wish all of you the greatest success in your future endeavours. Class of 2019, never stop dreaming, never give up and always strive to, in the words of Bob Marley, “Love the life you live. Live the life you love.”
A jury of artists, namely Dalila de Matos, Paulo Carvalho and Vladimir Juk, assigned the first three places, in the following order: In Touch Edu Centre - Teresa Fernandes Reddam House College - Prof. Lurdes de Matos Boksburg High School - Prof. Carla Esteves The “Galos de Barcelos” from these three schoo ls are on exhibition for a limited time at the Consu late General of Portugal in Johannesburg and is open to the public. At this exhibition there are also works by Portug uese artists, Victor Fernandes, Justino João and Lauren -Tina Estrela. A very big thank you to all the schools that partic ipated in the contest and special thanks to the Portug uese Reddam students for their teamwork, creativity and enthusiasm. Muito Obrigada

Boys. Two words that describe the camp that only the matrics and the teachers that joined us on the camp will understand, onions and pilchards. We finally reached our final year of school, Grade 12, which entailed many lasts as well as our lovely matric dance which was a wonderful evening filled with, reminiscing, celebration, fun and another after-party.

This event is the performance of the Grade 10, 11 and 12 Dance Studies students’ biggest assignment of the year and is the creation and documentation of their own individual choreography. As might be expected it is an enormous task which is planned, conceived and rehearsed throughout the year. The students are required to produce a choreography with an original theme. They choose the music to accompany the dancers, design costumes, make use of creative choreographic and production elements. The performance at the Choreographic Soirée is the final product. This year’s event was outstanding and the standard of work was extremely high. The creativity and insight of our senior dancers is developing greatly. The evening was slick and the dancers performed incredibly well.

INTERHOUSE PLAY FESTIVAL
COLLEGE PERFORMING ARTS
T
his year’s Interhouse Play Festival was a night of fun and laughter. The theme? Comedy!
Thirteen, ambitious and talented, Grade 11 directors were given the task of putting on a comedic play. They could either choose a script, or re-interpret a given script taken from the old-school T.V series, “The Carol Burnett Show.” Comedy is tricky, as timing and the fast-paced energetic feel of a script needs to be maintained. The grade 11 directors took on this challenge with great vigour and rehearsed in the evenings and over weekends. Rehearsals were intensive, and every cast member worked very hard on creating a piece that would be both entertaining and comedic. The evening opened with audience members roaring with laughter - always a good sign! Our lovely MCs, Jaden and Zachary, managed to make each play introduction a hilarious one. The backstage crew, headed by the invaluable Adam Pilling, worked long hours to ensure each transition into the next play was smooth and effortless. Actors gave it their all in the spotlight while directors whispered cues to our talented sound and lighting technicians, Ethan, Michael and Ryan. We were honoured to have our wonderful adjudicators Mr. Crawford, Mr. Baloyi, and Ms. Beling, on board to provide their expertise and feedback.
The awards were: Best Lighting: Connacht, “The Big Day” Best Sound: Leinster, “The Boyfriend” Best Poster: Ulster, “A Honeymoon in Florence” Best Adapted Script: Munster, “Courtroom Rules” Best Set: Ulster, “A Honeymoon in Florence” Best Costumes: Ulster, “A Honeymoon in Florence”

n the 5th of March this year we held our annual Inter-house Music Competition. The build-up to the event saw the holding of auditions and already then it was clear this year would be different. This year saw the event as our biggest yet with the longest participant list we’ve ever had. The event boasted incredible amounts of new and upcoming talent within the school and set a very high standard for any Interhouse Music events to follow. Best Overall Performance was shared by Kelly Johnston for her vocal performance of “Lay me Down” by Sam Smith and Shannon Makura for her vocal performance of “Natural Woman” by Aretha Franklin.

n the first term, we held the Interhouse Dance Competition. The standard of technique, choreography and performance was very pleasing, with a wide variety of styles shown – Ballet, Hip-Hop, Spanish, Jazz – just to name a few. Some performers express themselves so thoroughly on stage, and it was a wonderful opportunity to see that unfold. The evening was enjoyed by both the audience and adjudicators. The passion, talent and dedication displayed by the students, at this age already, create such promise and hope for a bright future! We are proud of all the hard work that went into this evening and believe that it will continue to grow!

Standing up against a ruthless king By Julia te Reh
REDDAM HOUSE BEDFORDVIEW 2019
This year’s drama production explored the renowned story of Antigone by Jean Anouilh. Derived from Sophocles’ classical play, it explores the story of a young girl’s journey, Antigone, the daughter of Oedipus, the king. Antigone’s brothers, Polynices and Eteocles, killed each other in combat because one of the brothers refused to step down for the other to become king. Creon, Antigone’s uncle, has taken over the kingdom. Creon wants to make it clear to the public that disobeying the law will lead to punishment. Eteocles is given a religious burial and Polynices’ body is left outside the city to rot, for everyone to see. Antigone was very close to Polynices and wants to bury him. The play explores the transcendent force of love. Antigone epitomises defiance, strength and bravery as she stands up against a ruthless king and powerful state. She is an extraordinary character because of
her honesty and tenacity - she is described as a reckless little girl who never liked rules and dresses. The cast and I, sat down and started exploring the powerful images found in Anouilh’s texts: Antigone alone at a dance captivating everyone with her presence, her digging up sand on a misty night to bury her brother, Antigone playfully pulling her sister’s hair and racing through the palace gardens. We wanted to excavate these images and integrate them into the text. The process of creation began: this would lead to constant collaboration as everyone had the chance to share their ideas. It is incredibly exciting to work with a cast that exudes a seemingly endless amount of imagination and creativity. New thoughts and ideas welled up, and the excitement was palpable - we were onto something new, the play seemed more alive now that it was personalised… it became everyone’s play.

41 My deepest gratitude must go to Mr. Crawford who guided the production from the get-go - without all your support, help and feedback the production would not have evolved the way it did. A big thank you must also go to the parents for all their support and patience (thank you so very much!). I would like to thank the cast for all their hard work, strength and openness - it has been inspiring to watch you bring this play to life.
REDDAM HOUSE BEDFORDVIEW 2019
Though there isn’t a particular setting in the play, we made a reference to the 1920’s, changed the chorus to a silent group of women, and turned the chorus narration into a voice-over which would play over an old radio. The set changes became part of the play, as the chorus moved set pieces to literally construct the story for us. Antigone’s inner world was explored through memories which were enhanced by song and movement. The text was transformed into a powerful production - it was indeed rewarding to witness!

As the cycle turns with upcoming eager students becoming involved and replacing “old hats” in this specialised field, I believe that next year, they will have a hard act to follow, replacing students of the calibre we have come to expect who are now moving on. As hard as it may be to follow in their footsteps, I believe that this challenge will create even greater incentive and competition for the next generation of students to attain their arts and cultural points for half and full colours for Sound, Lighting and Backstage work. I would also like to thank the Arts and Culture staff and Head of Department Daryth Crawford for all their hard work which has ensured the continued advancement of this department. ravelling to Belgium on student exchange was a truly memorable and growing experience. Not only did we get to experience a different schooling system, but we also had the opportunity to explore a different culture and a new landscape. While at St John’s we got to experience the IB school system and attend classes that we didn’t even know existed including Theory of Knowledge and Core. St. John’s International School is absolutely beautiful and we were so grateful for our time there. While at Saint John’s we were welcomed into the boarding house and experienced a lot of warm hospitality and friendliness from all the borders and staff. Within a week, we had become family and built friendships that we hope will last a lifetime. We also had the opportunity to explore Belgium’s many beautiful city attractions including Ghent, Antwerp, Brussels, Waterloo and Bruges. Visiting the Waterloo Memorial, Magritte Museum, Manneken Pis statue, Saint John’s Hospital, Parlamentarium and having Five Guys and shopping in Antwerp were among the highlights of our trip. We had the opportunity to experience and try new foods including frites, Belgian waffles and Speculoos cookies. Our trip to the Neuhaus Chocolate factory left us feeling a little heavier and our wallets lighter, but the experience was well worth it. We are so thankful for our time in Belgium and are grateful for all those who made our trip possible.

The breath-taking scenery of the Pietermaritzburg countryside warmly greeted us after a tedious bus ride on 17 March. The gust of fresh air overtook us and the view of the mountains gave a new meaning to tranquillity. ECabazini Zulu Home was to be our home for three days.

ONE FOR THE BOOKS! The warm welcome gave me a homely feeling and what soon followed was a lesson on the setup of the Zulu homestead, the importance of cows and the Zulu tribe’s ability to make full use of Mother Nature. We learnt how to live with eternal load-shedding and how to sustainably make our phone batteries last us the full three days. The food was most definitely a highlight; the “mothers” stuffed us with good soul food, ensuring we never went hungry and didn’t miss mom’s cooking! Our camp experience comprised of pottery lessons, mat making, beadwork and the milking of cows. We capped it all off with a trip to Umhlanga Beach for a day of wave riding and beach football. Our nights were made up of stargazing and screaming out songs at the top of our lungs without fear of noise complaints from neighbours. The trip allowed the grade tens and elevens to bond, solidify existing friendships and encourage new ones. Overall, this experience presented the opportunity to permanently ruin white sneakers, dirty clothes without fear of judgement and eat till walking was considered an extreme sport. Zulu Camp 2019: An unforgettable experience along with unforgettable memories.Special thanks to Mr. Aarone Shibambu and Mr. John Nkala for safely transporting us there, Mr. Slater, the phenomenal people of ECabazini and, most of all, Mrs. Siphiwe Nkosi.

he Design department at Reddam House once again put its best foot forward in 2019 by showcasing some quality student work on display during the Annual Fashion show. As part of their final practical exam work, Grade 10 students are required to produce a fashion piece set to a theme to exhibit it at the Fashion Show the following year as part of a Fashion Design Competition. The theme was “African Wonderland” and students were required to produce hats or head-pieces that would need to be worn and paraded on the evening of the Fashion Show. There were some very interesting interpretations and the students learnt much about production techniques and the technical aspects of ergonomics and anthropometrics. Some students made their head-pieces much larger to make them more visible on ramp and the visual impact was memorable.

Keano Alves: Dale Carnegie is a journey of a lifetime that really touches the soul. It is a life-changing experience that will evoke many different emotions that you may or may not have experienced before. It gives you emotional intelligence as you get to understand people and improve social interactions and break the cycle of fear and judgement. It allows you to persevere even in the toughest of moments to take a deep breath and carry on. It is a great accomplishment to not just understand others but yourself as you can be yourself. It forces you to push the boundaries of your comfort zone to take on new challenges and get more involved. To dig deep and change your game. Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all. Keabetsoe Ratshefola: The Dale Carnegie course is designed to develop self-confidence, the ability to get along with others in one’s family and, in social and occupational relations, to increase enthusiasm, reduce tension and anxiety and to increase one’s enjoyment of life.” The Dale Carnegie course taught me that a leader’s job usually includes influencing people’s attitudes and behaviour for a team or an individual to thrive. The course taught me that to be an effective leader, one must be sincere, vulnerable and empathetic. One of the principles that really spoke to me was: “Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves.” So, I encourage you to be present, sincere, honest and to speak your truth.

head to Lufuno face-planting into water while on a hike and Brett throwing his wet clothes over a cliff. The boys learnt to stick close to keep warm in the cold by huddling together while the girls learnt how to withstand the freezing cold weather while taking pictures in skirts on the mountain.
It all started back in grade 8. I remember all of us standing in front of the hall nervously trying to make new friends and not knowing what to expect on our first day in high school. We were then immediately pounced upon by the grade 12s. We were forced to wear those itchy masks, that we untidily crafted by ourselves, and those oversized yellow minion T-shirts as part of our initiation. I will also not forget how we were forced to eat disgusting mystery foods in the not-so-amazing race. To end off our first week, we had our assembly and that assembly certainly prepared us for the impending years of our rather interesting assemblies, I mean who could ever forget Llewellyn, Adam, Aidan and Tyrone’s iconic cover of ACDC’s ‘Thunderstruck’ in grade 9? But this year we will all stand together and make our final assembly go off with a bang!
2018 was an emotional rollercoaster for us all. We started the year off strong, planning our fashion show that we, in fact, started planning back in grade 10. We put on one the best fashion shows with which, I am sure, everyone including the teachers will agree. It was then only a few months down the line when we lost two very important people in our lives, Success and Zoran. None of us can and will ever forget Success’ goofy laugh and Zoran’s shyness. Going on leadership camp after that really did bring our grade together. From the girls and boys fighting with each other through the walls to all of us eventually singing “I want it that way”, but the girls then got shut down by the people in the front who were trying to sleep.
Afterwards came the “Who am I” camp in grade 10. While us ladies were enjoying a quiet time away in a luxury lodge with electric blankets, getting to know each other, the boys were freezing in the cold and had some rather odd experiences. From Jayden Bird flying into a rock and seriously injuring his
Thank you all for the tremendous five years of high school which I will treasure for the rest of my life.
As a grade we have come extremely far and, each year, have grown closer to each other. We have such talented and entertaining individuals and that is what makes our grade so unique and what will make all the teachers, especially Mrs Alberts, miss us so much. It has been an extremely long trip to get here but we have all emerged resilient through all of it with the constant help of Mrs. Meneghini who was always on hand to rescue us when we needed her help most.
Enjoy your stay in Atlantis everyone!

SALUTING OUR PROTEAS SPRINGBOK AND PROTEA FEVER CERTAINLY GRIPPED THIS NATION IN NOVEMBER WHEN THE BOKKE SPECTACULARLY DEFEATED ENGLAND 32-12 IN THE RUGBY WORLD CUP FINAL. ON THE REDDAM HOMEFRONT, WE ALSO HAD OUR OWN HEROES TO GET EXCITED ABOUT ON THEIR ACHIEVEMENT OF PROTEA COLOURS. Matteo Damilano, a Grade 11 student, took his passion for Mountain Biking and Cross-country racing to new heights when he was selected by Cycling SA to represent South Africa at the African Continental MTB, Championships held in Windhoek, Namibia from 12 to 14 April.

Catarina Pinheiro started ballet in Nursery School when she was four and it was quickly realized she had a natural talent for dance. She represented South Africa in Poland at the Dance World Championships both in 2017 and 2018. Last year, Dancesport South Africa recognized dance as a national sport and Protea Colours were awarded to dancers competing internationally. This year, Catarina was part of a dance programme created by choreographer Hope Maimane. We look forward to Catarina continuing her dance journey in 2020 as part of The Academy SA and the South African Dance Team, this time as a Senior.

Jasmyn Groeschke was awarded Protea Colours in November for representing South Africa at the IDO Tap Dance World Championship in Riesa, Germany. The sections in which
she competed were solo, duo, trio and small group. She received her colours for tap but has represented South Africa in other dance styles such as jazz, modern, showdance and ballet. Caitlin Croucamp, in grade 11, was selected for the South African National Judo Team to compete at the 2019 African Judo Championships in Senegal in May, and at the 2019 Commonwealth Judo Championships in Birmingham, UK in September. Caitlin was ranked number 1 in South Africa for both the group four (15-17 year-olds) and group five (18 – 21 year-olds) categories in her weight category and therefore represented South Africa in both groups for these competitions (she is number 64 on the world rankings for the U17 age group and ranked number 73 in the world for the U21 age group).

To put the world rankings in each category into perspective, the top 22 in each group and weight category qualify to compete at the Olympic Games. So, to rank in the top 100 means that Caitlin is competing with the world’s elite athletes. Caitlin was one of only 17 individuals in South Africa to receive their first dan (black belt) grading for judo last year, and only one of five ladies to garner this achievement.

HOCKEY TEAMS RISING IN THE RANKS By Dolan Da Silva
The year kicked off with a lot of expectation following the 2018 hockey season. The season commenced with the Waterstone Festival which featured the likes of St John’s, Curro Aurora, St Benedict’s, Waterstone, St David’s and Crawford Lonehill. Our teams started the season off in perfect stride with the 1st Team boys and girls taking second place in the competition. With great results achieved in 2018 we moved into the Eastern’s Premier league for 2019 with the likes of St Benedict’s, Marais Viljoen, Kempton Park Hoërskool, CBC, St Dunstan’s, Boksburg High, Springs Boys’ and Edenvale High School. We needed to prove that we could play against the best and achieve great results. With much hard
work and determination Reddam finished in fourth place which is a commendable achievement. The girls enjoyed a great season against tough competition keeping the Reddam flag flying high and finishing the season in third place. Another special moment was our U16 girls’ team finishing third at the St. Dunstan’s Spar Hockey Festival by beating South Downs. Without a doubt the ultimate moment of the season was the Boden Trophy. Finishing third in 2018 Reddam had a taste of victory and wanted to build on their rankings. Playing some strong competition against the likes of St John’s College, Boksburg High, Florida and Linden the team managed to fight their way into the final vs St John’s College. This will be a final that many will never forget - “The day Reddam beat St. John’s to win the Boden Trophy.” I am so proud of Reddam Hockey and feel we still have lots to accomplish but with the right coaching staff and players we can achieve anything.

s part of our annual celebration of World Book Day the Grade 7s were asked to donate books, so that other children might also have an opportunity to read for enjoyment. Now in the second year of our involvement in this project Reddam, Bedfordview has donated several books to the home, although this year our students simply amazed us with their generosity and donated over 450 pre-loved children’s books to The Johannesburg Children’s Home.
Our Grade 7s could dress up as their favourite character from a book as part of the celebration. Head of Operations at the Johannesburg Children’s Home, Fiona Duke (left) took delivery of the books. This initiative has become part of the Grade 7s attempts to honour our school’s motto to Give Back, and we hope to continue to support the home each year.
In picture is Nicole Gillanders (right) and Brenda Kahl - who run the Science, Biology and Technology department. Together they inspire young minds to investigate scientific concepts and use a hands-on approach to experiments in the classroom environment. Students are encouraged to engage in practical tasks inside and outside the classroom - understanding how science relates to the world around them.

Studying prepositions Our Grade 6 students “reinvented” the old elastic Chinese Skipping game - jumping inside, outside, over and onto elastic bands, chanting the rhyme (inside, outside, inside, across and over) to reinforce and remember that prepositions are Parts of Speech that denote “positions.”

ullivan Shaw’s Spectacular – was absolutely spectacular! There were plenty of nerves on Opening night but with the lights, colours, excitement and loads of smiles the nerves quickly faded away and our students performed wonderfully. Thank you to Lauren Harding, Edith Klug, Janet van Vuuren and all our teachers for the dedicated hard work to make this concert happen. Special thanks to all the parents who helped with costumes, props and makeup – we really do appreciate the help. Said one visitor at opening night: “Sullivan Shaw’s Spectacular, was the best school production I have yet seen. I loved the sets, the performances, the costumes, the choice of music and even the students who walked around during the show selling balloons and popcorn. Everybody who was involved in the production clearly loved what they were doing and were happy to be involved.”

2019 was once again an exciting sporting year. With all the excitement leading up to the cricket and netball World Cup, this really inspired the students to strive for their best performances yet. The success we celebrate is attributed to the devotion of our dedicated coaches, parents, teachers and pupils. Our focus is still on mass participation and giving the pupils the opportunity to experience all that sport has to offer. Our students are blessed with many abilities which Reddam House strives to develop and nurture. Our coaches serve as role models in creating real winners, teaching our pupils perseverance, dignity and dedication. Participation in sport is considered as an important part of the educational philosophy at Reddam House. We cater for boys and girls at all levels in a wide variety of sports and the experiences gained in all areas are supportive of the educational aims of the School. Pupils participated in several sports in each season, with a choice from Water polo, Cricket, Swimming and Tennis in summer and Football, Rugby, Cross-country, Athletics, Netball, Hockey and equestrian in winter. It was encouraging to see that we had increased our numbers in each age group improving and being able to field more teams per age group. We were competitive in all the top leagues in various sports and the students enjoyed the festivals and tournaments in which we competed in a wide variety of sports. We have had several pupils represent the district and province and more than a few sports, well done to all those pupils. In conclusion, Reddam House has enjoyed a successful sporting year and well done to each pupil who was committed to a team which formed part of this success. Well done to all those pupils who were selected for various district, provincial and national teams, a lot of hard work and dedication goes into these achievements. Sincere thanks must also be extended to our parents for sacrificing their time and for being so supportive of their children.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude and appreciation for all the hard work and dedication provided by the players’ parents for their solid support and to the coaches for all their time and passion for the game shared with each player on and off the field. The results achieved by Reddam, Bedfordview this year, against some very big schools, are a testimony to our progress, but much must yet be done in the coming seasons.

Netballers enjoy a successful year
R
eddam House Bedfordview always strives to challenge our Netball players to play more, train more and achieve more – and this year proved to be an exceptional season for us. As always, our girls were eager to begin early in Term 1 with pre-season training and this enthusiasm would stand them in good stead once the busy season began in Term 2. Many times, our girls had to balance a busy academic schedule with multiple games being played in a week, but, as usual, our girls were stalwarts and could always be relied upon to give of their best.
107
By Karen Comley
Apart from league games, our girls were taken out of their comfort zone at the beginning of the season when we attended Netball Camp. It was three days of extensive training and lots of fun which all added to the wonderful spirit enjoyed by all for the rest of the season. Once again, we were fortunate to have two current Protea Netball players as part of the coaching crew on camp. Erin Burger and Renske Stoltz, who were part of the successful squad which ended in fourth position at the Netball World Cup this year, managed to excite our girls with their fantastic skills and friendly natures. Our league this season, pitted us against several strong schools and our teams had to contend with tough opposition. Once again though, our girls put on their best performances each time. Several of our teams successfully qualified to play in the District Play-Off games where we crossed pools with other top schools. Our U13 girls managed to reach the semi-finals of our District’s Championships but, unfortunately lost this game in an epic battle. It is our U11 girls though, who continued their dominance shown all season, who triumphed in the final game of the Championships, winning gold. This is a formidable team and we look forward to seeing these young players flourish further in the future. As the cliché goes, ‘team work makes the dream work’, and as Netball coaches at Reddam Bedfordview, we hope that we can continue to enthuse our girls with a love for this game so that we can send them on more Netball adventures in the coming years and continue to triumph on the court.
REDDAM HOUSE BEDFORDVIEW 2019
We chose to challenge our U13 girls this year and attended the Southern Cape Schools Challenge in George in April. Their commitment to practice and their determination to improve their skills for this tournament would lead to them experiencing a great season.

Football Tour to Umhlanga By Matthew Costa

O
ur weekend began with a very early start to the day and since everyone was excited about this trip, excitedly we headed to school in the dark and immediately hopped onto the bus upon arrival. We made ourselves comfortable for the 8-hour bus trip – which actually felt much shorter because of all the fun we had along the way.
REDDAM HOUSE BEDFORDVIEW 2019
On arrival at our destination we were buzzing with excitement mainly due to a large intake of ‘healthy’ snacks along the way, but this just added to our happy expectations of playing some tough football against different schools. We rolled out of the bus and had to get changed quickly ahead of our first game and enjoy an excellent lunch provided by Reddam, Umhlanga.
BOYS’ U13 VS BORDEAUX
Our first match kicked off in a positive mood and we produced a good first-half performance. However, our game in the second half was proof that our sugar rush from the bus trip had finally worn off! Despite pushing
through, we lost our first game of the weekend. This, however, motivated us to play much better in our second match, which we won comfortably. Just like that, and our first tour day was done. We then headed to our hotel to check in and get ready for our dinner at the local Spur restaurant. After a tasty meal, we returned to the hotel and settled in for a good night’s rest. Saturday morning saw us back at Reddam Umhlanga, ready to play against the other schools who had been invited to participate in the Reddam Schools Festival. We played three matches and won all of them! After giving our all, we headed to the beach where we spent the afternoon playing beach soccer and enjoying the great outdoors away from the rush of Johannesburg. We enjoyed an early dinner at RocoMamas before returning to the hotel to prepare for a night out at the movies. Avengers: Endgame was our movie of choice and well worth it! Later that night we had to pack our bags to be ready early the next morning for our return to Johannesburg. A good tour indeed.

SEASON
It was one of the highlights of the year being able to witness so many swimmers participate at a single event and setting goals for the next year. What’s more, some of the records that had stood for over 10 years were broken in spectacular fashion. Well done to those students. Preparation for the swimming team’s season started in the first week of school with everyone training hard to be ready for a very competitive season. The A team continued competing in the prestigious A league and the B team participated in the B league. Congratulations to all the swimmers on a very successful season.

his year’s swimming season kicked off with a very competitive Inter-House event. Despite inclement weather our first attempt at inter-house was postponed to March; all our students were excited and ready to compete for their houses. Each event hosted two heats to give more swimmers the opportunity to compete which was very well received by the competitors.

arlier this year, a top group of U13 players were chosen to represent our school at the Southern Cape Schools Championship in George. Only 10 players were chosen for this tour.
We had to attend numerous rigorous training sessions where we worked on, and perfected, many new skills. The day finally arrived that we would leave for George; where we could board our plane and head on to an exciting George tour. We played two days of tough Netball, during which we met many new people and grew as Netball players by learning a lot from the experienced umpires and players in that region. Our matches consisted of four quarters instead of the usual two halves and it was clear that our fitness was our biggest asset that always helped us to come back in a game in the last quarter. Besides the amazing Netball that we played, we also went out and had fun – exploring the region around George. We took a road trip to Diaz Beach and spent the morning swimming in the freezing cold ocean! We then spent hours at the local water park, slipping down crazy slides. We got to enjoy a delicious meal on the beachfront before jamming to our favorite music in the bus as we headed back to our hotel. We shared the most incredible experiences together as a team and made many wonderful memories. Our first tour to George is one to remember!
Cross-country races were held at Huddle Park over four consecutive Mondays. Over 13 schools in the Edenvale area competed in the races. This year there was an encouraging growth in our cross-country team with over 50 runners, from U9 to the Open runners, participating. Outstanding sportmanship was evident at all the races. Special mention must be made of the runners who excelled in all their events - Gemma Caminsky, Ethan van Dyk, Matteo Hedtrich, Rebecca Cook, Shayna Burg, Dominic Costa, Rachel Sassine and Tomas Lopes. A special mention must also be made of my Grade 7 runners who persevered through hard work and enthusiasm right from their very first race in Grade 4. Reddam runners displayed an abundance of talent and can be applauded for their dedication in their extremely busy extra-mural programme. Thank you to the parents who diligently supported and cheered the runners on throughout the season.

orld Cup fever was evident at Reddam House this year for our 25th Annual Inter-house Athletics meeting. The three countries, England (Ephesians), France (Philippians) and China (Romans) flew their flags with pride while their athletes competed with great enthusiasm and determination to bring home that much sought-after winner’s trophy. The Ephesian’s house captains, Rachel Sassine and Matthew Costa opened the ceremony with a reading of the Sportsman’s Oath and Prayer. Mrs. Quayle then addressed all parents and pupils and declared the World Cup-themed athletics meeting officially open. It was a fantastic day with many races closely contested by some wonderfully talented little athletes - each being given an opportunity to show off their speed and agility. The recipients of the following trophies were acknowledged for their outstanding individual performances of the day. Junior Victrix Ludorum: Liel Tumssa Junior Victor Ludorum: Alonzo Magalhaes Senior Victrix Ludorum: Eunice Kabeya Senior Victor Ludorum: Gabriell Safi
After a morning of incredible competition and sportsmanship, the results saw Romans finishing in 3rd position with 862 points, Philippians in 2nd position with 869 points and Ephesians winning the day with 915 points! The Spirit Trophy was also awarded to Ephesians, for singing their hearts out all day long, raising the participants’ spirit and encouraging them to perform at their best. Thank you to all athletes, spectators, teachers and parents for a wonderfully supported and exciting morning of athletics.

Dr. Seuss Musical Jnr. By Ingrid Winter
REDDAM HOUSE BEDFORDVIEW 2019
Our Grade One children and their teachers were extremely excited to visit the Children’s Theatre to watch “Dr. Seuss Jnr. – The Musical.” Dr. Seuss must be one of our alltime favourite authors! His amazing imagination coupled with his use of language appear to appeal to both young and old alike, not to mention the crazy antics his characters get up to in each of his hilarious stories. We delighted in our experience as Horton discovered the city of Who-ville and its residents on a speck of dust. Horton promises to save the “Whos” floating in the Jungle of Nool however, his jungle friends do not believe that “Who-Ville” exists. Horton faces several challenges as he endeavours to keep his promise to the “Whos.”

136 Fathers’ Day By Natalie Fourie
REDDAM HOUSE BEDFORDVIEW 2019
Friday 10 May was a wonderful morning to celebrate Mother’s Day. The little ones excitedly decorated slippers along with their moms. The mothers got to relax and enjoy a cup of tea and their own personalised biscuit. It was great to have the opportunity to spoil our special moms.
By Judy Faldo Dads and Doughnuts was such a fun way to celebrate our Fathers on 21 June.Thank you to the Dads for taking the time out of their busy day. I hope you all enjoyed making the keychains with your little ones. Watching the tenderness and love you showed towards them was so very special.
Teaching children to love reading is one of the most valuable gifts we can give them. Hooked on Books visited our school to foster this gift. Performing snippets from the latest children’s books on the market, they delighted the Grade 1, 2 and 3 children, bringing to life the antics and characters in the books! Further, we purchased a copy of each book to put into the library so they can re-live these stories over and over again!

LEARNING TO LOVE BOOKS
Careers Day
People’s Theatre outing By Kelsey McFarlane Stage 5 students went on a very exciting outing to the People’s Theatre where we watched Madagascar. When we arrived at the Theatre, we quickly went to find our seats and waited eagerly for the play to start. We watched an amazing performance where we met Gloria the Hippo, Marty the Zebra, Alex the Lion and many other entertaining characters. We all had an amazing experience and enjoyed every minute of our outing!
REDDAM HOUSE BEDFORDVIEW 2019
During the second term, the Grade 1s enjoyed learning about the different career opportunities in South Africa. Moreover, they presented a speech on the career path they would like to consider once they finished high school. Each learner presented with such enthusiasm and great excitement. We are so proud that Reddam House is part of the educational journey that will equip our future teachers, doctors, occupational therapists, mechanics, business owners and more.

REDDAM WALKS ALL OVER CANCER!
By Rochelle Vermeulen
138
Once again Reddam House Bedfordview has displayed its timeless ‘Giving Back’ approach by supporting and creating awareness of the Cancer Relay for Life. This event is an uplifting and truly inspiring walk that commemorates and celebrates the lives of cancer survivors and sufferers throughout Johannesburg. The Reddam staff has long respected the wonderful cause and, along with the Reddam students, decided that this was their year to get involved! The Reddam team wore their unique Cancer Relay shirts in aid of the students and staff participating in the walk along with generating a responsive mindset towards cancer among the Reddam family. We look forward to supporting this worthy cause again next year.
12392 sandwiches were made By Dalene Quayle
REDDAM HOUSE BEDFORDVIEW 2019
Mandela Day always provides the perfect platform for the students at BCC to put our school motto into practice. Armed with loaves of bread, margarine, various spreads and butter knives, our BCC children got stuck into making sandwiches as Reddam’s contribution to 67 minutes for Mandela Day. Happy bunnies, from Stage 1 to Grade 2, lovingly tucked chocolate treats and fruit into sandwich bags ready for distribution. Some of the sandwiches were sent across to the Main Campus where the older children used 6700 sandwich packs to create a portrait of the great man himself - Mandela. Once completed, it was disassembled again, and the food parcels were deployed to various needy organisations around Gauteng. In total 12392 sandwiches were made excluding fruit and treat packs.

NON-STOP FUN AT MAC’S FARM
139
A 45-minute drive took our Stage 4s to Mac’s Farm - a place of fun and excitement. They got to feed the animals, go on a pony ride and jump to their hearts’ content on the jumping castles. Our little ones never stopped for a minute. They were treated to hotdogs and popcorn and, of course, a bottle of water to quench their thirst after a busy morning.
REDDAM HOUSE BEDFORDVIEW 2019
When we saw the buses stop outside in our parking area all the excitement started. Bouncing, climbing, swinging and stretching was what the morning was all about. So much fun was had by all but soon we settled down to have a snack and a sip of water while we were awarded with our medals for being super stars!
BCC SNIPPETS
Fun with our furry friends It’s always a hop, skip and jump down to the Reddam Bunny Park to feed our favourite bunnies. Before we go down to the hutch, we all get turns to chop up a bunch of treats such as carrots and lettuce for the bunnies to eat.

By Gail Cochrane By Lyn Pienaar On Thursday, 13 June the Stage 1 and 2 children were treated to a visit from Lory Park Zoo. The little ones got to touch a python, a tenerack (Madagascan hedgehog) and a monitor lizard which was very exciting. They also got to feel an empty tortoise shell, a set of horns and a crocodile skin.
Wow, what an excitable bus trip to the airport. We were going to Safair Offices to see a real aeroplane! Mr Biermann (Ziaan’s dad) was there to meet us along with Cabin Attendants Michelle and Michael. They boarded a Safair aircraft and had a real safety briefing conducted by Michelle. When exiting the aeroplane the door to the cockpit was open so the children could see all the “buttons”!
REDDAM HOUSE BEDFORDVIEW 2019
By Cayla Saunders In Term 2 our stage 1s and 2s were treated to a visit from the Lory Park Zoo. We loved learning about all the animals. Although they were quite “scary”... We loved how friendly they were towards us!
Café
By Gail Cochrane Term One started off with a bang as Drum Café visited our school to entertain the ELS kiddies. Drum Café came with a team of musicians who got all the children involved and drumming away. By the end of the session, not only were the children rapping on the skins, but even a few of our teachers. What a wonderful, exciting morning. Cannot wait to see Drum Café again!
Reddam BCC holds elections By Dalene Quayle With the whole country buzzing over the national elections in April this year, it seemed the ideal opportunity to educate our ‘BCC electorate’ on how the voting process works. The candidates and their manifestos were introduced to the children, posters went up, voting took place by secret ballot and thumbs were inked to confirm that they had voted. The winning party, in a landslide victory, was the Mr. Sloth party with a manifesto of “no homework.” To that end, the Grades 1 to 3 children were rewarded with a week of no homework. A lesson well learned.
STAGE 1
Drum Café By Lyn Pienaar The Stage 1 children had an awesome visit from The Drum Café on 21 February. The little ones enjoyed watching the drums being played by the percussionists and tried out their own drums and percussion instruments with curiosity and excitement.

Grade 3 Camp By Bianca Bouffe REDDAM HOUSE BEDFORDVIEW 2019
The Grade 3s where filled with excitement as the days to our annual camp rolled by. As the day finally arrived bags were packed onto the bus, we waved good-bye as we headed off to camp. From archery to water rafting, nature walks to cat walks, there was never a dull moment. Sound of laughter and smiles on faces filled the camp site as memories were made. With our happy campers tucked in, we waited to see what the next day would bring. An early start to a busy day. Gum boot races, paint war faces and another day done and dusted. All ready to go, we arrived back home!

A
very excited group of Grade Ones boarded buses and headed out to the Field Berry Farm. On arrival they had some lunch and then the fun began. We watched a short clip on how the farm operates and the many uses of raspberries, then each child received a punnet and we headed out eagerly into the raspberry fields where they picked and filled their punnets with fresh and delicious raspberries to take home. The bus ride home was filled with excitable chatter about what each child planned to do with their newly acquired berries. It truly was a spectacular and fun outing- enjoyed by all.
WORLD BOOK DAY By Dalene Quayle Organised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to promote reading, publishing and copyright, World Book Day creates an opportunity to focus on books and reading at Reddam. Our little ones, from the youngest to the oldest, dressed up as their favourite book character. They also brought an age-appropriate copy of the book to school and donated it to their class library. Thank you, parents for getting behind this initiative, helping your little ones to foster a love for books and reading.

150 Friendship Day By Tarryn Hart
REDDAM HOUSE BEDFORDVIEW 2019
BCC Campus was abuzz with excitement as our little ones dressed up in an array of red, white and pink clothing and celebrated a day of friendship.
By Andrew Welgemoed 2019 proved to be an exciting cricketing year for all our cricket teams, despite all the lightning and bad weather interruptions. Our cricket season is split in two with half of our games in the beginning of the year in term one and the rest in the fourth term. Our boys played some fantastic cricket all round, from the mini cricket on Saturday mornings all the way to the mid-week games for the Terhorst and Commonwealth seniors. Many of our talented cricketers have managed to make their respective district teams and are definitely going to do us proud when they perform at the district tournaments later in the year. Our Senior Commonwealth team are also extremely excited for their annual Cape Town tour, we know that they’ll do us proud when representing Reddam House Bedfordview against the other Cape Town Reddam schools. A big thank you to all our coaches for a wonderful and organised cricket season, here’s to the next one, may we continue to grow and produce even more talented and respectful young cricketers.
