Thando Dhlamini 1. Please provide a brief background of who you are?

My name is Thando Dhlamini, I am 26, I am from Ladysmith, KZN, I studied a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at the University of Pretoria.

I chose LLB because I had always had a passion for standing up for those who could not stand up for themselves, myself included and to make lots of money.

After Googling the company, I was excited by the idea of working with weapons, which I was later disappointed to find that it was not the case. However, I was also happy to work outside of the mainstream legal field - it’s refreshing.

I look forward to learning about contract management, interpretation of contracts, networking, and exposure of working for a multinational company. A well as how I can help the company reach its vision and mission through my appointment.

To obtain transferrable skills and knowledge that I will use it as building blocks for my career in the legal field going forward, I find the programme to be robust and challenging, in a good way - I believe that my experience here will serve me well in my future endeavours.

2. Why did you choose your particular field of study?

3. What inspired you to apply for the Bursary and or the Intern programme at Saab Grintek Defence?

Jacques Matthee 1. Please provide a brief background of who you are?

My name is Jacques Matthee, 25, I grew up in Rynfield Benoni and studied Computer and Electronic Engineering at North West University Potchefstroom.

I always enjoyed taking things apart to discover how they work, and then using the spare parts to create something new or different. So I thought Engineering will provide me with ample opportunities to create and investigate new technologies.

A big driving force of becoming an Engineer is the ability to help humanity through advancements in technology, I thought Saab Grintek Defence would be an ideal place to work, as the aim of SAAB is to help and protect people. Also being a defence company, SAAB has to push the technology boundaries.

How all the complex systems work together to achieve a certain goal.

It will provide me with opportunities to grow as a person and to learn from professionals with years of experience. It will provide me with the skills and experience to become a Professional Engineer.

Ndumiso Khumalo

1. Please provide a brief background of who you are?

My name is Ndumiso Khumalo I am 25 years old. I grew up in a small village, Emoyeni, near the town of Winterton, which is situated in the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains in Kwa-Zulu Natal. I later moved to Pietermaritzburg to complete my High school. I studied a BSc(Eng) in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Cape Town and currently finishing off my MSc Electrical Engineering.

Growing up I was very curious about the world around me and how things worked. I had a particular interest in understanding how modern-day electronics worked: from cell phones, radio to television. During high school, I developed a strong interest in computer programming and that was what really informed my decision to peruse in a career in Software Engineering.

I was first introduced to Saab Grintek Defence at the end of my matric year as I was doing some research on companies offering bursaries to computer engineering students. I was taken aback by the large scope of work Saab Grintek Defense was involved in and the technologies they were developing for the defence industry. During my first year of study, I applied for the bursary programme and since the second year of study, I have been part of the Bursary programme. Five years later I am excited to begin my Graduate internship here.

I am looking forward to learning more about SGD’s product and also learning new skills in software programming.

The privilege of being part of the graduate programme here at Saab Grintek Defence is that one is exposed to a wide range of engineering work from product design, development, and testing. The teams are quite diverse when it comes to skillsets so opportunities for learning and advancing one’s skills are endless. I believe being part of the graduate programmer here at Saab Grintek Defence will give me a good understanding of the Defence industry and equip me with a strong set of skills to advance further in my career as a Software Engineer.

SGD Software Engineers Participate in the GYSEOY Challenge The GYSEOY Challenge fosters interest, insight and skill in System Engineering in young South African engineers. Teams of young engineers from different industries and organisations compete to be the Greatest Young Systems Engineers of the year. GYSEOY is an opportunity for young engineers to develop and showcase their Systems Engineering skill and for organisations to foster and develop mentorship of the engineering knowledge pool. GYSEOY is a wonderful way to enrich an employer’s in-house engineer in-training process. It is a once in a career opportunity for a young engineer. Teams of three or four engineers, each team preferably from a single employer are eligible to participate in the challenge-not individuals. Explicit support from the employer is a precondition for the acceptance of a team. “Although the task is usually quite challenging, as the scenario is non-technical and stretches the engineer to understand the purpose and benefit of system engineering and apply the methodology using the current tools to model the problem and solution domains. In our area of business, it is vital for engineers to understand and apply system-engineering concepts well.” Shares Alan John, Executive Manager - Product Design The overall idea is to create a system engineering leadership for the next generation, by focusing on the development of both technical skills and personal skills.
