Court Report / Horoscope / Volunteers For the week of August 11-17, 2019 ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A chaotic atmosphere taxes the patience of the Aries Lamb, who prefers to deal with a more orderly environment. Best advice: Stay out of the situation until things settle. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Tension runs high in both personal and workplace relationships. This can make it difficult to get your message across. Best to wait until you have a more receptive audience. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) This is a good time to take a break from your busy schedule to plan for some well-deserved socializing. You could get news about an important personal matter by the week’s end. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) An offer of help could come just when you seem
The Sun Sudoku Answer from page 28
to need it. But be careful about saying yes to anything that might have conditions attached that could cause problems down the line. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Sometimes a workplace colleague can’t be charmed into supporting the Lion’s position. That’s when it’s time to shift tactics and overwhelm the doubter with the facts. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) You continue to earn respect for your efforts to help someone close to you stand up to a bully. But be careful that in pushing this matter you don’t start to do some bullying yourself. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Don’t ask others if they think you’re up to a new responsibility. Having faith in your own abilities is the key to dealing with a challenge. P.S.: That “private” matter needs your attention. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) This is a good time to use that Scorpian creativity to come up with something special that will help get your derailed career plans back on track and headed in the right direction. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) While change is favored, it could be a good idea to carefully weigh the possible fallout as well as the benefits of any moves before you make them.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) The Goat continues to create a stir by following his or her own path. Just be sure you keep your focus straight and avoid any distractions that could cause you to make a misstep. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) A colleague’s demands seem out of line. But before reacting one way or another, talk things out and see how you might resolve the problem and avoid future misunderstandings. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) A personal matter appears to be making more demands on your time than you feel you’re ready to give. See if some compromise can be reached before things get too dicey. BORN THIS WEEK: You’re able to communicate feelings better than most people. Have you considered a career in the pulpit or in politics? (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Echoes from the Dugout By Denny Moyer
Sometimes you have to write stuff. I had quite a mentor in Dwight Pelkin. He was a character, no doubt, and truly unique, yes, “unique,” (one of the most over-used and misused words in the English language, but a perfect fit for Pelkin), for there was none other like him. The drummer he marched to also came from a mold now broken. Len Wagner, a Green Bay Press-Gazette writer, did a piece on Pelkin and cast what I thought was one of the most memorable lines of all time: “In 1943, Dwight Pelkin left Green Bay and went to Sheboygan. Neither town has been the same since.” That is a paraphrase, and I might have missed by one or two either way on the year, but you must admit, it is a good line. Certainly not in the league of ”Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow. . .”, or “The quality of mercy . . .” or even “Just a bit outside“ or “There’s no crying in baseball”, but a good line. Most of the stories about Pelkin are true: we did fish him out of a swimming pool after an AP sportwriters meeting, he did show up in pajamas for an all-state selection meeting, he did get me in a fight with a redneck in Appleton over a peace medallion he proudly wore during those divisive Vietnam years and he did wear crash helmets driving his yellow Dodge Charger on city streets. To many he was strange, different. To me he was teacher, coach, confidant, and, yes, boss. He wasn’t the most knowledgeable in the finer points of sports strategies, but he was a great deadline writer: fast and accurate. And he was my friend. I remember a lot of things he said, but one stands out: “If you are afraid to write what you really feel, you are not a writer.” I followed that maxim and on more than one occasion it brought Harry Maier, the Sheboygan Press’ managing editor storming out of his office to my desk, waving the paper and shouting at me. I wrote what I had to write. I’m doing it again. I’ve had a lot of fun with this column. I’ve tried to keep you up to date on Sheboygan A’s activities; I’ve shared my feelings on baseball and tried to explain my feelings for the game; and I’ve written some flat-out dopey stuff.
Perhaps I shouldn’t do this, but this time I am going to write about a problem that I see ahead for the A’s organization. Our current president Scott Stangel is an outstanding leader. He holds things together when people who have been placed in charge of various operations are wanting to go in different directions. I admit to causing some of those problems with which Scott has to deal because my management style has always been to find competent people, place them in an area in which they can work comfortably, explain what I am looking for and then get out of the way and let them experience success. I let them make decisions; I try not to interfere. My thinking is that if they feel they have accomplished something without me looking over their shoulder they will develop a sense of pride in their accomplishments; they will develop confidence in themselves, in the program and in the organization. This process doesn’t always work. Sometimes, because they have been successful, their pride, self-esteem and ego blow up like a helium balloon. This is when, since the guys who write books and give the seminars never address the downside of empowerment, I turn the whole issue over to Scott, who always seems to be able to clean up the debris. Both Stangel and I have talked of relinquishing our roles, but we have stayed on for basically the same reasons – completing current projects and finding replacements. We don’t have to look far for accomplished people, we have plenty of those, but are they willing to accept the challenge and responsibility of leadership? Will they continue to strive for development, cohesiveness, continuity? How will they handle the reins? Will they be control freaks or will they allow good people to be successful? And most importantly, will they grab a broom? Pelky and I frequently disagreed on things, but on one thing we were always on the same page. The byline writer is not the star of the newspaper. He or she is nothing without the kid who gets the paper to your porch. Anybody out there hearing this? I am laying the cards on the table. A transition is in the near future. We need candidates for leadership. If you want to talk about it, whether you are currently involved in the organization or might wish to become involved, let’s talk. Call me.

These ‘Dented’ Doors Do No Good Car Talk by
Ray Magliozzi
Employment vacancies to fill? Reach the perfect candidate in The Sun employment section!
Dear Car Talk: We have a 2017 Jeep Cherokee with the dented-door look. Is this a fashion statement, or does it have a genuine purpose? We live on a dirt road that gets muddy in winter. The shape of the Jeep’s doors splashes mud onto the door handles. We do not have this problem with any other vehicles. Thanks. — Sam We call it the “sunken cheeks” look. Automotive fashion is like every other type of
fashion. Once somebody has success with some odd twist or look, everyone else follows. The sides of cars used to be slabs. A crease or an indentation was relatively rare, because it was hard to manufacture. We felt fortunate enough that the doors didn’t fall off when we opened them. Making them look fancy never crossed our minds. But as manufacturing got more sophisticated, we started seeing more creases, lines and bulges. Then it was off to the races.

Now, pretty much every new car has a rising belt line, a crease under the windows, a huge front grill, bulging fenders and some kind of carved out doors, like your Cherokee has. Eventually, this trend will get out of hand, and some carmaker will buck the trend and make an oldfashioned, slab-sided car that sells like crazy. Then everyone else will go back to slabs. This is as inevitable as watching lapels widen and thin, or watching your grandmother’s ugly furniture show up on a trendy magazine cover at the supermarket. I don’t think it has anything to do with aerodynamics. It’s possible a “scooped out” door may have an effect on the handling of a Lamborghini

when it’s going 170 miles an hour. But it’s not going to change anything on a Jeep Cherokee doing 70 on the highway. So, if the only downside is the mud splattering, Sam, you need to go back to your dealer and buy the official Jeep doorhandle mud rag for $39.95. Don’t worry; your next Jeep Cherokee will look different. Got a question about cars? Who’s Right: The Dealer or the Mechanic? Car Talk by
Ray Magliozzi Dear Car Talk: I have a 2009 Toyota RAV4. The check engine light came on a year ago. I took it to the dealer, and they said it was an oxygen sensor. I had it repaired, which wasn’t cheap. Everything was fine for a few months, and then the check engine light came on again intermittently until finally it stayed on all the time. I went back to the dealer and was told it’s definitely the “bank one catalytic converter.” They want $1,200 to fix it. They said if it’s not fixed, it will eventually cause the car to stop. I checked with my local mechanic who says it won’t make the car stop even if I never have it replaced. I can’t afford to get it replaced. Who is right? — Gary
Your local mechanic is closer to being right than the dealer is, Gary. Your check engine light came on because your catalytic converter’s efficiency has dropped below what it needs to
be. It’s not doing its job of cleaning up your emissions anymore, and it needs to be replaced. That could be because you’ve used up your catalyst, or because a piece of it broke off and ended up in your muffler. Or on the interstate. If your converter ever got completely plugged up and blocked, then it would prevent the car from running. That’s what your dealer is saying. But I think he’s being alarmist. An inefficient converter is not the same as a pluggedup converter. Although it’s possible that if you wait long enough, someday you’ll have both, Gary.
The more pressing issue is that most states have vehicle emissions inspection laws. And your car won’t pass inspection with a failing catalytic converter. So, if you expect to drive this car beyond your next inspection date, you have to get it fixed. But you don’t have to get it fixed at the dealer. You can ask your local mechanic to get you a price on an aftermarket converter. It may be half as expensive. And it’ll probably last half as long as the factory converter. But that may be good enough, given the age of your car
and your repair budget. The only caution is that, in our experience, some aftermarket converters don’t work well enough to turn off the check engine light. So, ask your mechanic to use an aftermarket converter brand that he’s had success with on other Toyotas. That may give you a way to keep driving, Gary.
