LUMENIS’ 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS Special Edition

April 2017

CEO Opening Dear colleagues and friends, Welcome to this special 50th anniversary edition of Spotlight! I would like to dedicate the pages to come to the remarkable 50-year history of Lumenis and raise a toast to the people and technologies that have helped define the medical device industry and build Lumenis into the global leader we are today. Just to provide a bit of context, when we got our start with the first Coherent laser in 1966, The Sound of Silence by Simon & Garkfunkel was the #1 song on the billboard charts, The Sound of Music won the academy award for best picture and preparations for the moon landing were still ongoing. As new musicians, movie stars and milestones have come along, Lumenis has remained a constant – a model of longevity, redefining the world of noninvasive energy-based healthcare, one innovation at a time. From the first laser photocoagulator to the CO2 laser, from SLT to Holmium Urology and IPL, our industry is defined by the technologies and solutions conceived and pioneered by Lumenis. Connecting all these different technologies is one common goal – to always be the best, work with the best and provide the best; a perpetual commitment to innovation and quality, and to the partnerships with leading figures and institutions in the medical community that combined enable us bring to market premium solutions, with superior clinical outcomes for patients all around the world. From a product, technology and clinical perspective, meeting this lofty standard requires the ability to leverage both internal and external innovation capabilities. With this in mind, I would like to take this opportunity to formally and proudly announce the recent extension of Lumenis’ technology through the addition of both Pico-Second and Nano Q-Switch lasers to our suite of premium Aesthetic solutions. This unique and industry-leading technology comes to us after 20+ years of development by the American device manufacturer Focus Medical, and enables the extension of our premium reach to a new and exciting domain. On the internal front, Lumenis proudly showcased its latest innovation in Urology at the recent EAU congress, the new Moses Holmium. The unique Moses Holmium technology allows us to take holmium laser lithotripsy, first pioneered by Lumenis in the early 1990s with the VersaPulse system, and later disrupted again in 2014 with the game-changing Pulse 120H, to an entirely new level. On the other side of being the best, is providing the best – while technology is our foundation, delivering it to practitioners and patients around the world requires sales and execution of the highest caliber. And with our 50-year history comes a robust sales presence in over 100 countries, an industry-leading and internationally recognized service organization and a brand name synonymous with lasers, quality and longevity – that all allow us to do just that.

Aesthetic Technologies & Treatments

Aesthetic Technologies & Treatments In the 1990’s CO2 laser resurfacing was considered the gold standard for treatment of acne scarring and photodamaged skin. These lasers had considerable post-procedure problems including long recovery time high ratio of adverse side effects. Significant advancement has been made in aesthetic laser industry with the introduction of Intensed Pulse Light (IPL) technology in 1993, invented by ESC, which soon after became Lumenis. By using a range of wavelengths and a clever algorithm, IPL could treat many ailments at once. In 1998, a new concept of multi-applications systems was introduced with the launch of Vasculight ®. These systems started a trend of non-invasive procedures with lower downtime and associated risks, which is on a constant rise since then with a growing patients’ demand, leading to today’s best-selling system of Lumenis, the M22, that incorporates 4 different non-ablative technologies, offering different ways to rejuvenate the skin, with minimal downtime, and maximum comfort to the patient.

less adverse events, while introducing new options for skin rejuvenation treatments. In 2012 the UltraPulse SCAARFX was released- the world’s first fractional CO2 to impact up to 4mm in depth for effective treatment of scars. This treatment proved to be life changing for many severe scars patients. In the recent years, the use of CO 2 lasers started expanding to new areas. In 2015 Lumenis introduced FemTouch, a vaginal CO2 laser procedure for women’s health. This innovative laser procedure delivers CO2 laser to the vaginal wall, allowing stimulation of new tissue growth, by triggering collagen production.

With these new developments, physicians can now offer a large variety of skin treatments, tailored to their patients’ needs. Another revolutionary breakthrough happened in the 2000’s with the release of fractional CO2 lasers. In 2005, Lumenis released the UltraPulse ActiveFX – the world first fractional CO2 laser, followed by the UltraPulse DEEPFX, the world’s first micro-fractional CO2 laser. These new fractional CO2 features enabled lower downtime, with

KOL’s Journey with Lumenis

KOL’s Journey with Lumenis “I am fortunate to utilize Lumenis Optima Intense Pulse Light system in my clinic. Lumenis is the company which had the first FDA approved IPL system in the late 90’s, and has gone long way over the years, improving on the design and technology to enable doctors deliver a treatment that is efficacious and safe” Dr. Rolando Toyos

"When we were the first to develop the IPL in the 1990’s it was not clearly understood how a pulsed broadband non laser energy source could treat specific chromophore targets, but through the years it has proven to be one of the most versatile technologies on the market. The invention of these laser and light based approaches for dermatology opened up my practice for a whole new set of aesthetic indications I never had a good solution for. Now I can’t do without them!” Dr. Mitchell P. Goldman

“I was fortunate to receive one of the earliest units available in 1994 and was featured in a local magazine which literally caused the phones to ring off their hooks! The technology revolutionized my practice. Prior to laser skin resurfacing, there were limited treatments available that could safely and effectively improve the appearance of photoaged skin. The pulsed and scanned CO2 laser technology literally brought “Star Wars” medicine to the forefront at a crucial time to address the needs of aging baby boomers. The pulsed and scanned technology opened the doors for the fractionated laser technology we use today” Dr. Tina Alster

“The CO2 laser with high pulse energies and short pulses revolutionized the world of resurfacing. In the lab we measured the impact of pulse duration and irradiance on ablation efficiency, bridging earlier theoretical work with the ever expanding role of pulsed CO2 lasers in clinical dermatology” Dr. E. Victor Ross

KOL’s Journey with Lumenis

“The beginning of my relationship with Lumenis 22 years ago, really set the tone for the kind of access and high character of the individuals and the Lumenis administration have demonstrated over the years. I’ve known quite a number of colleagues in Lumenis and consider several if not many friends, not just colleagues in the process of allowing me to have the best devices in the highest quality of technology that could possibly be used to assist me in taking care of my patients. I believe that the Lumenis Company would do their outmost to give me the best technology that I can have and to take care of them to the highest level of quality that I can give them. I really see a commitment to that groundbreaking attitude at Lumenis. It’s usually about the bottom line not so much about what it is that I need, and to do it in a way that I think anyone of the people of that company would want that for them or for their families. That’s a standard I hold myself to as a surgeon and I think Lumenis examples that as a company” Dr. Paul F. Castellanos

“ESC Medical Systems introduced me to the “laser” business. And with it, the endless possibilities of taking care of my patients in ways I never dreamed. Lumenis has continued that dream, introducing me to their markets all over the world and allowing me to participate in the training of the next generation of laser experts. It has been a remarkable journey – all with the power of light” Dr. Michael Gold

“Pioneering Lumenis devices opened up an entire new realm of aesthetic and medical skin treatment. I feel privileged to have participated in the development of the original first Photoderm IPL and Ultrapulse CO2 laser. These devices transformed the way we treat skin disorders and laid the foundation for decades of innovation in dermatology” Dr. Arielle N.B. Kauvar
