PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT

SOUTH BEND BASKETBALL STAR RETURNS TO THE KROC

As a basketball lifer, McKnight knows a quality basketball program when he sees one.

By the time he was three years old, he was obsessed with basketball and only basketball. His kids now play a variety of sports including soccer and flag football. But that’s not really the point, not right now at least.

YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUE The best youth basketball league in St. Joseph County is back for another season, with age divisions for youth 5-6, 7-8, and 9-11. Practices will be led by the coaches on Wednesday evenings. Games will be played on Saturdays. Ages 6-11

VOLLEYBALL A AND B LEAGUE The Kroc Center hosts competitive volleyball play on Thursday evenings. We divide our offerings into an A & B league. The A league is for competitive players whereas the B league has a more recreation feel to it. League rules will be posted ahead of time. Ages 18+

MEN’S OPEN PLAY BAKSETBALL Specific gym time is allocated to adults wanting to play pickup basketball games at the Kroc Center. Gym rules must always be adhered to. Ages 18+

YOUTH PICKLEBALL We’ve partnered with Diverse Capitol Sports to host introductory sessions for youth wanting to learn Pickleball. Coaches will guide participants as they develop the skills needed to play competitive Pickleball. Ages 8-16

DROP-IN PICKLEBALL Drop-in Pickleball sessions are hosted Mon, Weds, Thurs, and Fri mornings at the Kroc Center. Evening open play sessions will be held on Tuesday evenings. Players are advised to bring their own paddles. Ages 18+

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Open play women’s basketball is held on Monday evenings in the Kroc Center gym. Come with a group of friends or on your own and hoop with other players! Ages 18+

GIRLS ON THE RUN We are so excited to be able to host this nationally recognized program at the Kroc Center, open to girls in grades 3 - 5. Ages 8-10 Email [email protected] to learn about scholarship information.

TEEN PICKUP BASKETBALL Youth will be able to come and run the Kroc Center courts on Friday evenings. Participants must be present in the gym by 5pm so we can draft teams. Kroc staff will be present to monitor gameplay. Ages 12-16

Questions? Call: (574) 233-9471 Email: [email protected]

He found one at the South Bend Kroc Center, where his three children play in the youth basketball league and where McKnight coaches their teams. “My son played flag football at the Kroc, so that’s how we got started in youth basketball,” he says. “When we saw that it was very competitive and wellrun, we decided to come back for the next season.” As a westside kid, coming to the Kroc Center was, in many ways, a return to McKnight’s roots. But there’s a lot more than a sense of homecoming that’s kept his family in the youth basketball leagues here. “The people who run the league really care about the kids and the community,” McKnight notices. “It’s obvious they’re not just doing it for the paycheck.” Besides its commitment to ongoing programs of excellence, McKnight also appreciates the diversity he finds at the Kroc. After spending a decade living abroad in places like Turkey, Greece, and Israel; embracing different cultures has become an important part of McKnight’s life. It’s something he wants to pass along to his own children.

“I coach because I believe the more involved parents are, the more successful kids become, and I don’t just mean in sports. If my kids want to become a basketball player like me, great; but I’m more concerned with helping them become successful in life.”

RECREATION

RECREATION 14

Will Brandon’s children go on to become professional basketball players like their dad did? McKnight isn’t so sure.

ormer South Bend LaSalle basketball star Brandon McKnight has had a long career in basketball – first as a runner-up for Indiana’s Mr. Basketball, then as a starter for Gene Keady at Purdue University, and later as a player in several top European professional leagues.

For Recreation Schedule!

CHURCH LEAGUE BASKETBALL The South Bend Kroc Center is proud to host the adult men’s church league. Players must be affiliated with a church to play. Teams will play once per night and the league will last for eight weeks. Prior to tip off, there will be a short prayer and devotional with both teams. Ages 18+

“The Kroc is a melting pot, and I wanted my kids to have that experience, to be around diversity of backgrounds and diversity of ideas.”
