10 to graduate during a pandemic. During times like this, it makes you realise how many things in this life we must be grateful for. One of these is that our grade 12's got to have their farewell in the beginning of the year before the virus rapidly spread and lockdown was announced. Another is, for the most part, we all remained unscathed and healthy. There were many ups-and-downs and pros-and- cons once the lockdown began, but what I realised is that no matter what happens in your life, your attitude towards life and your level of happiness is up to you and the decisions you make. All one needs to make one's self happy exists within one's self. No matter what you achieve, or what you have, how you choose the see the world and ultimately how you choose to see yourself, is all that matters. Some can be happy with nothing; others unhappy with everything. There is a quote by Epictetus (a Greek Philosopher) that says; “Who, then, is the invincible human being? One who can be disconcerted by nothing that lies outside the sphere of choice.” We have all been stressed about external occurrences that lie outside of our control at one point in our lives, but that only creates unnecessary worries. We should strive to only worry about what is within our control: our decisions, actions, and thoughts and not to worry about the things we cannot change. I believe all of us would be a lot happier this way and make greater strides towards fulfilling our potential. Aside from all the unusual occurrences this year, I believe that this was a great year in St Dominics Newcastle's history. We have struggled, overcome and triumphed not only as a school, but as a family. After knowing that we can get through a pandemic, it stretches our horizons to things we can achieve in the future. This year may not have been as any of us planned it would be, but I believe that we have all become stronger, wiser and more grateful about the little things that make life so worth living. I am grateful to have been your Headboy this year. I will forever cherish the beautiful memories and experiences that I have attained during my time here. 11 Minette Janse van Vuuren HEADGIRL a global pandemic. I never thought wearing a mask and practicing social distancing would become the new 'normal'. With all honesty, it hasn't been all fun and games, but it has been so worth it. This year has taught me a lot about myself as well as the value of time. It showed me how unpredictable life can be and how important it is for us to be able to adapt and make the most of what we have. It's been such a great honour to be in a school like St Dominics, where everyone has your best interest at heart and will walk the extra mile for you. St Dominics is a family where lifelong friendships are made and valuable life lessons are learnt. The school acted as my compass and guided me so that I could achieve all my goals, whether it be academic or personal. I want to thank every individual that has helped me grow over the years and become the best possible version of myself. Being Headgirl has been such a big honour. I had an incredible support system that assisted me to complete the tasks at hand, but also aided me to grow as an individual and a leader. This year I learnt the true meaning of servant leadership, leading through deed and I want to encourage everyone to become servant leaders, no matter where you are in your life. Get actively involved, place the needs of those around you first and always be willing to listen and learn. A word of advice to the students: Never underestimate the power of kindness. Be kind in all that you do, and the world will become a better place. When life throws rocks your way, don't see them as obstacles, but rather as building material to reach your dreams. Always give your best. Make yourself proud. Continuously be kinder than you feel, because emotions are temporary, but the way you act when you experience them, has the power to leave permanent scars. Psalm 121 has always been very close to my heart and I want to encourage everyone to read it. Always remember that you are never alone and I pray that everyone will receive God's blessings in abundance and become aware of His unfailing love and constant presence in your life.
