ANNUAL REPORT 2012
Photographs by Sandy Courvoisier.
May 2013 Dear Friends in Christ, The publication of this book celebrates the ongoing life and vitality of this parish church. In the past year, we have sorrowfully bid farewell to many saints who have loved Trinity and whom we have loved in return. Their legacy is evident in the pages of this book and in the way we hold them in our hearts as we continue to gather for worship in our beautiful church, grow together in ever strengthening faith and give ourselves to the work of Christ in the world. If you do not yet have a will, I encourage you to do so for the comfort and care of your family, especially if you have children. If your family in Christ is important to you, please consider making a planned gift to Trinity as part of your personal legacy. I can think of no better way to express to your children and your grandchildren how important your own faith is and to share it with generations as yet unknown. As you look through the pages of this book, I hope you will enjoy seeing the beautiful additions to our campus of Molly’s House for our youth ministry and the Carole Pettit Annex added to Canon Turner Hall. I believe that each person honored or remembered in this book would be proud to see the smiling faces of children who will grow in the love and knowledge of Jesus Christ. In our financial report, you will see that we are growing this endowment carefully. Our desire to maintain Trinity’s buildings and grounds and offer the very best clergy leadership for our programs relies on this fund and your gift – large or small – will help us grow from generation to generation. Yours in Faith,
The Reverend Henry L. Hudson, Rector

Thirty-Seventh Annual Report December 31, 2012
The Minister of the Congregation is directed to instruct the people, from time to time, about the duty of Christian parents to make prudent provision for the well-being of their families, and of all persons to make wills, while they are in health, arranging for the disposal of their temporal goods, not neglecting, if they are able, to leave bequests for religious and charitable uses. Page 445, Book of Common Prayer
Where There’s a Will, There’s a Future To be a philanthropist, you don’t need to have a building named after you. You don’t have to own a Rolls Royce, your own private jet, or a pull cord for the butler. All you have to do is care about the world around you. You have to care about what’s going to happen to that world after you’re gone. Do I need to have an estate in order to leave a gift?
Do I tell the Church that I left a gift?
Everyone can leave a gift. “Estate” is simply a word used to describe any money, property or personal belongings that you may have at the time of your death. Most people leave an estate when they die, even though few of us are Rockefellers.
That’s up to you. Trinity likes to know in advance so your generosity can be recognized. If you wish to leave a bequest, you may direct your gift to the Trinity Church Perpetual Memorial & Endowment Fund. This will help ensure a continuation of Trinity’s ministry far into the future.
Do I have to include my wish to leave a gift to a specific organization?
A charitable bequest will not take effect unless you state your intention in your will or living trust. Without a will, your property and finances are settled according to state laws, whether or not they coincide with your wishes. Despite this, seven out of ten individuals die without a will.
How do I leave a gift in memory or in honor of a person?
Who can help me arrange a gift?
A contribution to Trinity is a wonderful way to recognize someone who has made a difference in your life. This kind of gift can honor someone important to you in the form of a living endowment or someone you wish to remember in the form of a memorial endowment. You just need to make it clear that the gift is given in honor or memory of a particular person.
If you have an accountant, lawyer, insurance agent or financial planner, please talk with them about leaving a gift. A professional can tell you about the tax benefits of planned gifts.

Legacies and Bequests According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building on it. Each builder must choose with care how to build on it. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 3:10,11 Trinity has been blessed this year with several bequests and legacies that continue to build on the foundation of Christ, to strengthen our Church today and to provide for future generations. Mr. Edward B. Benjamin, Jr. Trinity Church’s former Chancellor, Edward B. Benjamin, passed away in October, 2012. A World War II veteran and a tax and estate lawyer, Mr. Benjamin served as a member of Trinity’s Vestry and served as the Chancellor for Trinity and for the Diocese of Louisiana. He has given generously of his time and resources over many decades. Because of their love for Trinity, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin were among the first to enroll in the Trinity Perpetual Memorial and Endowment Fund and to join the Trinity Legacy Society by informing the church of their plans to leave a Trust to the church. The memory of his loving and dedicated service will be cherished for many years to come. The Mary Catherine Rose Memorial Fund has been established to celebrate the life and service of Mary Catherine Rose. Mary was a dedicated Stephen Minister and Leader. Stephen Ministry is a method of pastoral care that is supported by extensive training and ongoing support. Stephen Ministers offer confidential personal care giving to members of our community who may be ill or distressed by some of life’s concerns. Mary was steadfast in her dedication to the Stephen Ministry and in her capacity as a care giver and leader. Carole Crowell Pettit remembered Trinity in her estate plans and offered the first contribution to our recent Capital Campaign. Carole had many friends at Trinity and shared her gifts with flowers and needlepoint generously with the church. Her greatest love was her family and so following her lead, the Pettit Family has added to her generous bequest in order to dedicate the Carole Pettit Annex in her memory for the enjoyment and education of children for many years to come. Mary Ferrell “Molly” Reily had an enthusiasm for Trinity that was legend. Her commitment to helping others was an inspiration as she served the Loaves and Fishes ministry loyally with her enthusiasm and energy. She saw God’s presence in all sorts and conditions of human beings. She left Trinity a very generous bequest, and her family has added to that gift. When we sought to find an appropriate memorial for her, the Vestry unanimously agreed to name the new youth center “Molly’s House.” With the approval and endorsement of her family, Molly’s legacy will be to welcome, encourage, and challenge generations of young people to grow in God’s love and service, to be angels of hope both here in New Orleans and in the communities where they live. A legacy gift has been given in honor of The Reverend Dr. Hill Carter Riddle, Trinity’s Rector from 1984 - 2003. The gift was given by Eli and Deborah Tullis in honor of their pastor and friend. During his nineteen years as Rector, Trinity established the Trinity Counseling and Training Center (TCTC), created TURN and established the Trinity Artist Series. A new organ was installed and the interior of the main worship space was redesigned for increased flexibility and beauty of the space. Additional gifts may be given to this endowment which will be included in the Trinity Perpetual Memorial and Endowment Fund.

Did You Know? • Using appreciated securities to make your gift delivers more tax benefits to you than using cash? • You can help guarantee the church’s future financial strength - help ensure that its work will endure and flourish - without affecting your assets or your financial security during your lifetime? • You can turn surplus life insurance coverage into a charitable gift, or create an endowment from your income rather than principal? • Life-income gifts offer one of the most signfiicant tax benefits that the IRS still provides to individuals? • Other planned giving strategies include outright bequests, donations of residence or farm while reserving usufruct, creation of a lifetime trust, and transfer of assets of small family foundations. About the Fund Fund Highlights
Excerpts from the original letter announcing the formation of the Trinity Church Perpetual Memorial & Endowment Fund Purpose
1. To provide the ideal means of perpetuating the memory of loved ones in a most significant manner;
2. Once a year thereafter, the honored person’s name will be published in a special Annual Report of the Trinity Church Perpetual Memorial & Endowment Fund. This Report, in addition to listing the names of all honored members, will also cover activities of the past year: receipts, disbursements, financial position, current programs, a separate list of that year’s donors, and the like. It will be mailed to each member of Trinity Church, and to contributors outside the Parish. 3. Each year on Trinity Sunday, an Annual Memorial Service will be observed in honor of all those enrolled in the Fund. The names of those enrolled during the preceding twelve months will be listed in that day’s church bulletin.
2. To provide a most appropriate means to pay living tribute to loved ones on occasions of importance, or simply to make an “extra” gift of 4. For all gifts, notification will be sent to the thanksgiving or celebration; next-of-kin (or, the honored person in the case of living tributes) indicating the donor but not 3. To provide a most meaningful means by which specifiying the amount contributed. the Church may receive bequests; and 5. Anonymous gifts may be made, such as 4. To establish a perpetual, vital, and ever-growing insurance policies on a donor’s life, during the endowment fund to preserve and strengthen donor’s lifetime. Trinity Church. Flexibility
Flexibility and discretionary use of the income are the keys to the success of the Memorial & Endowment Fund. By contrast, however, the prinicpal amount of the Fund cannot be spent, pledged, or otherwise committed without prior approval of both Vestry and Congregation. Upon receipt of an initial, or additional, gift, the following memorial procedure will be followed: 1. The honored person’s name will be published in the next Church newsletter.
Tax Advantages
The Trinity Church Perpetual Memorial & Endowment Fund is structured so that it affords the fullest tax advantage to donors provided by law. In case of major tax consideration, and concerning bequests, prospective donors are urged to consult their own counsel. Trinity will cooperate with those professionals, but can, of course, render no legal advice. By contributing securities which have significantly appreciated in value, it may be to a donor’s advantage to establish at this time a major endowment which can be added to periodically thereafter.
