COVID Alert mobile app is free for Canadians The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, and the Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, today announced that COVID Alert, a new national mobile app, is now available to Canadians for free download. The app, first developed in Ontario, helps notify users if they may have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. “Over the past several months, Canadians have been following public health advice and doing their part to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Now, these take steps to ease restrictions and safely restart our economy, we need to continue to work together to contain the virus and keep Canadians safe and healthy,” said PM Trudeau. Use of COVID Alert is voluntary, and serves as another tool to help limit the spread of COVID-19. Once the app is fully functioning in their province or territory, users who test positive for COVID-19 will receive a one-time key from their health authority that they can enter into the app.
When the key is entered, COVID Alert will notify other users who may have come in close contact with that person for at least 15 minutes in the past 14 days, so
it collects, and does not track a user’s location or collect personally identifiable information. The Privacy Commissioners of Canada and Ontario were consulted on the

The Government of Canada is also working with the other provinces and territories to bring their jurisdictions on board in the coming weeks and months. An expert Advisory Council will ensure the app meets the highest standards in public health outcomes, privacy, and technology. The members of the Council reflect Canada’s regional and cultural diversity, and cover a wide range of expertise, including health, privacy, data governance, science, and innovation. Their advice will inform the implementation and rollout phases of the app. The new COVID Alert app is just one example of how the Government of Canada is working with the provinces, territories, and they can contact their local public development of COVID Alert, to other partners to protect the health health authority for guidance. ensure the highest level of privacy of all Canadians, and support To safeguard the for Canadians using the app. efforts to restart the economy confidentiality and privacy of all The Government of Canada gradually and safely. Ely Buendia tells online talent show the musical plagiarism claims
Musician Ely Buendia called on the parties involved in the supposed plagiarism of an online talent show winner to take action and “set an example” to young people in the entertainment industry. The former lead vocalist of Filipino rock band Eraserheads on Wednesday wrote a lengthy post on Facebook where he appealed for the parties to make the situation “right” and “stand up for and give back to the art” that is a source of life for artists like him. “You alone have the power to make this right. You have the power to teach a young man and all the young people out there about to join the world, our children, a most valuable lesson that can have no other effect except make them good and become better,” Buendia said. “You have the power to
stand up for and give back to the art which has been a source of life for all of us. You have the power to set an example and for once do the right thing, and become a beacon of hope in these dark times ruled by greed, hate and lies,” the musician added. Buendia admitted that while there are “more pressing matters out there,” the implication of the
incident will “set a precedent and have repercussions in the years to come.” In the end, this will not just be about a song, a contract, a million pesos, or credit,” he wrote. “On which side of history do you want to be on? Search your hearts for the truth and it will set you free,” Buendia continued. Most Filipinos in the comments section agreed with the musician and said that the parties must “make a stand to protect intellectual property rights.” “The artist management, if it values artistry and creativity at all should likewise not stand for it,” a facebook user wrote. “Yes. Do not reward stealing other people’s ideas. The Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines protects literary and artistic works from the moment of its creation including musical compositions. Derivative works are also protected which include “dramatizations, translations, adaptations, abridgments, arrangements, and other alterations
of literary or artistic works.” Several local artists from the entertainment industry previously called out the online talent show The Pop Stage after the musical director of “Ang Huling El Bimbo: The Musical” claimed that its winner “ripped off” its musical arrangement on his final entry. CJ Villavicencio, the winner of the online competition named after actor Matteo Guidicelli, won P1 million and a one-year management contract from the Viva Artists Agency. V i l l a v i c e n c i o reportedly submitted a music video featuring a medley of Eraserheads songs but the musical director of the AHEB musical accused him of copying the arrangements without permission. AHEB cast members aired their disappointment while their fellow local artists Kim Molina and Jerald Napoles also condemned the supposed plagiarism. The Pop Stage, Popeyes and Guidicelli have not yet released a statement about the controversial Eraserheads medley and the grand finals as of this writing. (J. Malasig, Interaksyon)

Ang Sa Iyo Ay Akin’ to join Kapamilya Online Live lineup starting August 17 “Ang Sa Iyo Ay Akin,” the first new drama of Kapamilya Channel, will also be streaming weeknights via ABS-CBN’s Kapamilya Online Live starting August 17. The teleserye will air Mondays to Fridays after “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano” at 8:40 p.m., both on the cable channel and its streaming counterpart, according to the program’s latest trailer. Full episodes will also be available via iWant and TFC.tv. Kapamilya Online Live, which livestreams ABS-CBN programs on Facebook and YouTube for free, kicked off last Saturday, as the network continues to strengthen its digital presence to reach more Filipinos. “Ang Sa Iyo Ay Akin” stars Jodi Sta. Maria and Iza Calzado as close friends Marissa and Ellice, whose relationship is torn by the former’s envy and greed. They are joined by Maricel Soriano as Marissa’s mother Lucing, and Sam Milby as Ellice’s partner Gabriel. Produced by JRB Creative
Productions, “Ang Sa Iyo Ay Akin” was originally due to premiere on ABS-CBN on March 23. Its airing was first postponed in light of the coronavirus
lockdown, which resulted in an industry-wide production halt. At the time, Calzado also tested positive for the coronavirus disease. She has since made a full recovery. Uncertainties surrounding
ABS-CBN’s broadcast franchise further pushed the premiere of “Ang Sa Iyo Ay Akin.” With the lower House’s denial of ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal application, the network has since been forced to retrench entire units and thousands of employees, spelling the cancellation of some projects, too. “Ang Sa Iyo Ay Akin,” with a substantial amount of episodes already filmed, appears to have survived that cut, and in fact resumed production in the first week of July. Filming in areas under general community quarantine is allowed but with strict safety protocols that include preshoot quarantine, “lock-in” shoots, and prohibition of big crowd scenes. With ABS-CBN Channel 2 no longer on air, “Ang Sa Iyo Ay Akin” becomes the first fresh series of Kapamilya Channel on cable. It joins other ABSCBN dramas that were carried over to the new channel: “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano,” “Love Thy Woman,” and “A Soldier’s Heart.”(abs-cbn)

Inspiration begets inspiration. This motivated visual artist Dante Hipolito to paint Gov. Vilma with Pope Francis in the 29” x 24” oil on canvas titled Salubong. A distinct style of vibrant rural realism, it follows Pope Francis’ didactic intentions. Vilma as a farmer leading stars (from left) Gary Valenciano, Sen. Grace Poe, Marian Rivera, Dingdong Dantes, Coco Martin and Kris Aquino who are also costumed as country people in the festive welcome. Other entertainers are passionate about Pope Francis’ visit as well. Jamie Rivera praises his humility and compassion in her
song We Are All God’s Children. Rita Avila wrote the inspirational books The Invisible Wings and 8 Ways to Comfort with Grace and sent them as gifts to Pope Francis. Dingdong, on the other hand, believes Filipinos will also be brought closer to God by Pope Francis’ apostolic visit including himself, new wife Marian and, for that matter, all our entertainers. “Ibang klase siya. He brings with him
new hope with his understanding that Catholicism is not the Church but its faithful,” the actor reasons out. He goes on to explain what makes Pope Francis different: “Hindi doctrine ang gumagabay sa kanya kundi papaano ang doktrina nito ay maiintindihan ng tao at lalong maglalapit sa kanila sa Diyos at sa Kanyang Simbahan.” But Dingdong will not be able to witness
the visiting Pope’s activities because Marian and him will be on their honeymoon in Europe. “We know we’ll be blessed by him as he will bless all Filipinos,” he assures. For sure, Pope Francis’ visit has blessed us, bringing a new spirituality, even among entertainers. Perhaps, one of the most blessed in the country is Vic Sotto. “Dami kong blessings this year. Blessing ang maging senior citizen. May senior citizen card na ako. May 20-percent discount na ako sa restaurants. Libre akong makakapanood ng My Big Bossing sa Makati,” Vic shares. “Pero Eat, Bulaga! is my biggest blessing. Hindi biro ang abutin kami ng 36 years sa TV. But he twisted, “Ang magpasaya ng tao nitong Pasko is my biggest blessing.” Asked what blessing in 2015 he will seek from Pope Francis upon his arrival, he replied, “Wala na para sa akin. He thinks of the papal visit in positive terms, “Gustong-gusto ko siyang pumunta sa Pilipinas kasi he’s pro-poor at rebolusyonaryo.” Robin hopes, “Sana maimpluwensyahan niya ang mga politiko.” He is against the corruption brought about by capitalism, and many other actions and declarations not consistent with religious doctrines. Katulad naman ng lahat, basta may social distancing, kailangan naka-mask, kailangan naka-PPE pwera ako. Kasi, kapag on-cam kailangan tanggalin ko na ‘yung mask ko. Okay naman ‘yung ventilation dahil nasa rooftop kami, open air,”
says Dingdong. In an exclusive interview, Dingdong talks to Filipino postgraduate student, Jan Robert Go, who is currently residing on Wu-
han, China – once, the epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak. The assistant professor from UP reveals how his day goes during the two-month lockdown in a foreign land. “Sobrang interesting para sa akin din, isang estudyante na nasa Wuhan nu’ng nag-lockdown. By choice, nanatili siya roon at ikukuwento niya sa atin kung ano ‘yung naging experience niya sa loob mismo ng Wuhan, kung saan nagmula ang COVID-19,” Dingdong shares. Picking up where the show left off, Dingdong continues to explore the Indian subcontinent and the stunning and mystic Ganges River in the Filipino version of the BBC naturedocumentary, ‘Hidden India.’ On this Sunday’s episode, Dingdong explores the remark-
able and jaw-dropping Vinicunca or Rainbow Mountain of Cusco, Peru and unveils the reason behind the Andean mountain’s colorful sand. Born To Be Wild returns with all-new episodes After more than 100 days, and still counting, of community quarantine, GMA’s award-winning
environmental and wildlife program “Born To Be Wild” returns with allnew episodes. Hosts and expert veterinarians Doc Ferds Recio and Doc Nielsen Donato go back to the outdoors to continue the mission of saving animals. In Tanay, Rizal, locals seek the help of Born to be Wild when they discover that a pair of endemic North Luzon cloud rats is hiding underneath their roof. The cloud rats have been waiting to be freed since they became “locked down” inside this home in June. Doc Nielsen and his team step into the forest
once again to help these endemic animals return to the Sierra Madre mountain range where they belong. For the first time since the declaration of general community quarantine, a wildlife rescue is finally underway. At the height of lock down, trails were free from hikers and beaches were empty. But in different parts of the country, sea turtles have been found stranded. In Iloilo, five sea turtles were accidentally trapped inside a fish net. The fishermen then banded together to save and release the endangered turtles into the ocean.
Long before the pandemic, Doc Ferds and his team were frequent visitors of a sea turtle rescue facility in Iloilo. Doc Ferds checks on his former sea turtle patients to see how they are doing and to find out if they can still go back to the wild. Viewers abroad can catch these stories and more as Born To Be Wild airs all-new episodes on GMA’s flagship international channel, GMA Pinoy TV. For the program guide, visit www. gmapinoytv.com.

Darren and Jayda drop surprise single ‘Sana Tayo Na’ Young singers Darren Espanto and Jayda have partnered for the first time for the warm and rosy love song “Sana Tayo Na” produced under Star Music. The two initially teased the collaboration by simply tweeting “Sana tayo na” and tagging each other’s accounts, which immediately sent Twitter abuzz with assumptions on what their posts meant. “Sana Tayo Na” even landed on the site’s Philippine trends list. A feel-good love poem, “Sana Tayo Na” confesses two people’s hopes of being together in the future with assurance and stability. It’s a lighthearted take on expecting that the stars would align and unite two people in love someday. The track is a revival of Jayda’s father Dingdong Avanzado’s composition, which was originally a part of his “Coming of Age” album. The new version was produced by Jayda and ABS-CBN Music creative director Jonathan Manalo. Jayda’s last collaboration was with “The Voice Teens” finalist Jeremy G in 2019 for the heartening track “Perfectly Imperfect” which she penned. Darren, on the other hand, is fresh from performing his latest single “Sasagipin Kita” at the virtual celebration of MYX Awards 2020. (Malaya) ***********

Unless the Covid-19 virus is contained, Alessandra de Rossi doubts that she will agree to start work on a new project under Viva Entertainment. “Kung sabagay, sa October pa naman magsisimula ito. But still, ayaw kong magtrabaho, kung may coronavirus pa,” she said. “Takot akong magkasakit. The idea pa lamang na posibleng ma-isolate ako for almost a month already scares me.” Yet, Alessandra does not deny she is excited for her elder sister, Assunta, who is giving birth to her firstborn, a girl, in two months. “Malaking blessing kasi si ate ko at sa whole family na finally magkaka-anak na siya,” said Alex. “Sixteen years niya ring hinintay ang blessing na ito.” A“I will be her yaya,’’ Alex said. “I already volunteered for the job.’’ Alex, now 36, seems to have no plans of settling down. Kapuso comedian Michael V. gave an update on his fight against the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In a recent interview with “24 Oras Weekend,” the “Bubble Gang” star said he is recovering his sense of smell. “‘Yung pang-amoy ang nakakatawa, kasi may pang-amoy na ako… So hindi pa rin siya 100% pero at least,” he shared. “Nu’ng isang araw nagluluto ng hamburger ‘yung kasambahay namin, naamoy ko from this room. Pero nu’ng isine-serve na sa akin, nu’ng binigay na sa akin, hindi ko na maamoy from this distance. So magulo talaga,” Bitoy said. He also advised other COVID-19 patients to stay away from stress. “Isa sa mga pangunahing contributor ng COVID is ‘yung stress eh. So talagang dapat pagka nakaramdam ka, kapag may symptoms ka, nagpa-test ka at positive ka dapat gumawa ka ng paraan para hindi ka ma-stress during the time na naka-quarantine ka,” he said. Once fully recovered, the veteran comedian said he wanted to donate plasma to help other patients. “‘Pag completely naka-complete na ako nu’ng 14 days, I think the responsible thing to do is just that, mag-donate para makatulong sa ibang mga kababayan natin at makatulong sa siyensiya. Siguro kahit paano may maiambag ‘yung plasma ko, ‘yung dugo ko para makahanap ng gamot or lunas dito sa sakit na ito.” Michael V. revealed last month in his video blog that he tested positive for COVID-19. Back to school in a pandemic
With the recent announcement that K-12 schools in British Columbia will reopen for the 2020/21 school year under Stage 2, parents will have to start planning for their backto-school shopping. The start of the school year often comes with new routines, tasks and preparation. However, this year will be particularly different due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Spending may increase for some families as parents may now have to consider adding masks, sanitizers as well as personal learning equipment and other technology to facilitate mixed learning environments. BBB recommends the following tips when looking for school related items, either in person or online: In-person shopping Mask requirements, physical distancing, availability of hand
sanitizers and other precautions are a part of the COVID19 health protocols in many stores. When it comes to trying on the latest fall fashions or the right fit for school uniforms, parents may want to contact the retailer ahead of time to check on the dressing room procedures or to confirm if the dressing rooms are open. It is best to start shopping early to avoid extremely lengthy lines closer to September. Research big ticket items - Check with your child’s school to find out their technology requirements, and determine if you need to purchase highspeed internet. Before purchasing an expensive laptop, tablet or other computer accessory, research the brands, warranty, customer reviews and the prices at various stores to make certain you have identified the best deal. Verify the retailer’s reputation on BBB.org.
Shop smart with sales and tax-free promotions Compare prices between different retail stores, save coupons, sign up for email alerts and redeem any cash-back or rebate offers. Ask for discounts - Many stores and software companies also offer discounts. Some of them are available to students that have either an .edu email address or a student ID. Make certain they are affiliated with the retailer they are advertising for. Even if you do not see a discount advertised at the store, it does not hurt to ask. Consider buying in bulk - Since schools are reopening in a few weeks, some teachers may ask parents to buy bulk items (eg. paper towels, tissues, wipes, hand sanitizers) for the entire classroom to use throughout the year. Compare lists with other parents and see if the
costs can be shared. Shop wisely and safely online - When shopping online, be wary of click bait ads that feature items you may want or need based on your search history. Look for more information and tips to use on BBB.org/coronavirus.
Passport services in Canada resuming by mail and by appointment for travel in less than 30 days Ottawa, Ontario—The Government of Canada has started the gradual resumption of some passport services in Canada. Starting July 31, 2020, Canadians can apply for a passport by mail. If Canadians have an immediate need for a passport or are travelling in less than 30 days with proof of travel, they can request in-person appointments. Applicants can visit Canada.ca/passport to learn more and find out how to apply. If Canadians do not have travel plans, we ask that they wait before applying for a passport. Processing times are expected to be longer than normal due to high demand and measures to safeguard the health and safety of our employees and Canadians.
Applicants who are concerned about renewing their passport should note that they can now use the simplified renewal process within two years after the expiry date rather than one, if their passport expired on or after February 1, 2019. This means they have more time to renew if they aren’t travelling soon. The simplified renewal process allows Canadians to submit a shorter form without resubmitting their citizenship documents and a guarantor declaration. As Service Canada Centres begin to gradually and safely reopen, passport services will be limited to appointment only. Canadians can continue to visit canada.ca/service-canada-home for the latest updates. (Info / Info (IRCC)
