Windermere, Then... The area we call Windermere today was once home to the Timucua Indians who lived off the abundance of the many local lakes. The town of Windermere, originally named after Windermere England, was established as a residential development in 1889. The town was founded in 1915 and later incorporated in 1925.

In the early 1800’s, northerners came to the area to spend winters in the warmer climate and began investing in the land by developing citrus crops. In the early 1900’s, Windermere became somewhat of a tourist area, providing winter cabins and abundant fishing in the area’s many clear sand bottom lakes. The area began to fill in with those seeking Central Florida’s warmer winter climate thus began building both small vacation homes and large estates. In 1920, the population of Windermere was only 320.

Filled with majestic sprawling oak trees, beautiful clear lakes, and a mild climate, Windermere became a popular place for the families of means to summer and eventually take root. What they developed, was a small community, big on quality of life. Behind City Hall, stands a little one room school house built in the late 1800’s, providing a glimpse of early life in Windermere.

Among Windermere’s oldest buildings on the National Register of Historic Places is The Cal Palmer House. This became Windermere’s first Post Office in 1911 and functions today as an interior decor shop. Also on the Register is the historic Windermere Town Hall. It was originally the home of The Women’s Club, established in 1922 as a result of their relentless efforts in making surgical dressings during World War I.

While staying at the Rossmore Inn, built in 1913, visitors would enjoy its renowned good food and spectacular parties while experiencing breathtaking views of Lake Butler and the surrounding majestic trees from it’s 35’ bluff, the highest in the area. From it’s beginning Windermere has had a rich history of natural beauty and a higher quality of life not often found.
